Russia and Ukraine launched attacks on each other's infrastructure shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that both sides had agreed to stop attacks on energy facilities.
Ukraine has long made it clear that it would be willing to stop its drone and missile strikes on Russian oil facilities if Russia stopped its own airstrikes that caused power and heat outages in cities across Ukraine last winter, The Wall Street Journal writes .
But in the end, both sides have escalated their campaigns in recent weeks. With Russian forces unable to achieve more than minimal advances on the front lines, Moscow has resorted to drone and missile strikes against civilian targets in Ukraine, including trains and gas stations, journalists emphasize. Western diplomats are concerned that Russia is seeking to provoke a major electricity and heating crisis in Ukraine this winter as the war lurches into its sixth year. Trump, under pressure from rising domestic fuel prices, claimed the US had even told Zelenskyy that Ukraine should stop diverting diesel fuel from Russia. Trump claimed that both sides had agreed to cease attacks on energy facilities. A few hours later, Zelenskyy offered a more measured assessment, stating that his country had asked its partners to seek an agreement with Russia to stop the destruction of critical infrastructure, and that Ukraine would cease its own strikes if this was achieved. "Food, energy, and other basic life-sustaining resources must be protected, and Russian strikes are primarily aimed at them," Zelenskyy stated. However, he also expressed doubts about Russia's willingness to comply with any agreement.
He, in turn, wants a long-term, reliable halt to the strikes, not a short-term one that could help Putin briefly lower gasoline and diesel prices before Russia's parliamentary elections this month. The Kremlin, meanwhile, called Trump's energy truce a "good initiative." Media previously reported on what the former CIA director believes could force Putin to end the war . He stated that the outcome of the war will depend on who is quicker to transform innovations into mass production and sustainable military advantage.
