If Russia intensifies its drone and missile attacks on Polish territory, NATO will not fight against Russia. Ivan Stupak, a military expert and member of the Security Service of Ukraine from 2004 to 2015, told Unian in response to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's statement that Russia could launch air strikes on his country in the coming weeks and months.
"This raises an interesting question: 'What will NATO do?' NATO won't lift a finger to comply with Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This article stipulates that an armed attack on one NATO member is considered an attack on the entire Alliance, and member countries must provide the ally with the necessary assistance, including the use of armed force," the expert noted.
According to him, no one will do this, since it requires a vote of all 32 members of the Alliance. "The US will definitely not vote for this, nor will the other countries that play along with them. Therefore, NATO will not fight against Russia. And I'm sure that right now, Warsaw is racking its brains over what to do if such strikes occur," Stupak said.
He explained that the discussion could involve reducing Russia's diplomatic presence and expelling Russian diplomats.
"They could also decide to deploy air defense systems in the direction of Ukraine. This is a reasonable option," the expert noted.
He added that one possible solution could be to shoot down Russian drones and missiles over Ukrainian territory near the border. "Another possible response is for Poland to 'cut' the Suwalki Gap, which separates Belarus from Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. This would be an interesting move. This option could be considered, but a decision needs to be made. To do this, it would be necessary to effectively 'cut' the corridor, deploy tanks there, explain this to domestic audiences, and be prepared for a possible response from Russia. After all, one could follow, and these scenarios need to be anticipated," Stupak emphasized.
According to him, it is most likely that there will be no serious action on the part of Poland, as was the case previously when Russian air targets flew into its territory.
As reported, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, at an emergency meeting with representatives of the government, army, and intelligence services following Russian strikes on the Ukrainian checkpoint "Yagodyn" near the Polish border, stated that Russia is increasing its activity, and Poland must be prepared for a possible deterioration in the security situation, since further escalation could affect Polish territory .
He emphasized that they would be working in an intensified manner. "We can expect that the coming weeks and months will be a period of very intense action on Russia's part. We cannot rule out that escalation will also spread to our territory," Tusk said.
