The Houthi rebels released on Tuesday more than 25 minutes of footage that they claim shows their fighting against the Saudi-backed forces in Eastern Jawf province, in Yemen. According to Associated Press the video shows vehicles on fire, shooting, and troops moving in the desert. AP could not independently verify the dates, locations or conditions under which the videos were shot.
A Houthi official said Tuesday that warplanes of the Saudi backed forces struck Yemen, killing three people, including two children, while Human Rights Watch accused the Houthi rebels of possible war crimes with their attacks on commercial vessels. The renewed fighting in Yemen is endangering civilians and threatening shipping through the Bab el Mandeb, in the Red Sea, a route that has become more important due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, sparking the war. About 500 have been reported killed in the recent exchange of fire, according to the World Health Organization. Save the Children said Tuesday that between Sept. 3 and 9 alone, 43 children were killed or wounded, the highest weekly casualty toll recorded by the relief agency in a year. Nearly 94,000 people have fled their homes in Yemen since fighting between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi backed forces of the Yemeni international government escalated this month, the International Organization for Migration said Monday. The worst-hit areas are Taiz and Lahj, where 48,000 have been displaced, the U.N. agency said, adding that more than 2,000 people have fled across the sea into Djibouti. Around 200 schools have been converted to shelters in southwestern Yemen to absorb an influx of families, the International Rescue Committee, an aid group, said. Fears are mounting that Yemen is inching closer to a return to a civil war that killed 150,000 before a 2022 ceasefire.
