Eagles coaching staff gives multiple important updates ahead of their week 1 clash vs the
Washington Commanders.
It's becoming more and more clear who they trust, who they want to see more out of, and
how they are going to coach come game day.
I'm your host Colin Kelley.
Welcome to Eagles Digest.
In today's video, we're going to dissect quotes from both Eagles DC Vic Fangio and
O.C.
Sean Mannion, explain why this particular presser is so insightful.
But before we do, subscribe to join the most passionately informed community of Eagles
fans.
It's free.
We're less than a hundred away from 2,500 subs.
When you think about this Eagles team, this defense, a play that's going to have to
step up, it's Jihad Campbell entering just his second season in the former first round
pick from 2025.
Vic Fangio gave some specific comments about Jihad Campbell as he looks to really step
up entering year two, the Eagles, notably without one N'Kobe Dean anymore, not a like
for like comparison, but the skillset, one that Jihad Campbell could bring how he could
emerge this season, Fangio, courtesy of Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green, Jihad Campbell
is quote, not where we want him to be as a final product.
Fangio added, he's getting better and better every day, needs more reps after missing time,
both of the last two off seasons, injuries have been a bit of an issue for Campbell.
Although he did play a majority of last season, he just wants to see one Vic Fangio a bit
more, especially Vic Fangio expecting a lot, talking about Jihad Campbell.
He's good in the open field, he's athletic, six foot three, he can run, but I feel good,
I don't want to give the wrong impression here.
I got spoiled earlier in my career, ever heard of the Dome Patrol, the bar is high for me.
To give some context of the Dome Patrol, the Saints, late 80s, early 90s linebacker core,
where by comparison, Ricky Jackson, Sam Mills, two Hall of Famers, Pat Swilling, a defensive
player of the year caliber player, Vaughn Johnson, a multi-time Pro Bowler, and oh,
they only just made history by becoming the first quartet of linebackers to all make the
Pro Bowl the same season in 1992.
Vic Fangio has seen greatness, so skews things a little bit as far as his perception of linebacking
rooms, certainly expectations with a first round pick in Jihad Campbell, but also Vic
Fangio has the relative comparison of the early in their career first team All-Pros
in a different area of this defense with Cooper Dejean and Quinion Mitchell.
So by comparison, he's looking at a worse unit in terms of the linebacking core, but
still talented nonetheless.
And when you think about this Eagles team ahead of their week one matchup versus the
where I think this defense ultimately steps up and really allows this Eagles team to win.
You look on Cauchy, currently 69% chance the Eagles win against the Commanders this week
one matchup on Cauchy, you're trading directly against other users, not the house like traditional
sports books.
You're buying yes or no contracts on the outcome of events across sports, politics, even the
weather.
For example, your Philadelphia Eagles to win by seven plus points, a six and a half point
spread a yes, $25 yes trade at 49% chance pays out $51 and 27 cents.
I have a lot of confidence in this Eagles team, the defense to set up the offense to
ultimately take care handle business first, this Commander's team.

When you think about this Eagles defense, Vic Fangio's expectations for the defense
One Jonathan Renard, Zach Berman of The Athletic tweeting Fangio with respect to the star acquisition
on the edge, he's still working back.
He's been limited participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday.
He's getting meaningful work, but will take time before he gets the full workload.
Also, we got insight as to the Eagles second safety nickel formations.
You think about when there are going to be five defensive backs, the three corners plus
Makuba and then Marcus Epps.
You look at him filling in as that second starting safety.
It says a lot.
The trust that Fangio has in Epps having been here when the Eagles made the Super Bowl run
a few seasons ago that fell short against the Chiefs Epps then going on to play with
the Raiders for a couple seasons, but coming back was with the Eagles in 2025.
I think it makes the most sense.
Michael Carter ultimately not getting the nod here.
I still think Carter could play an important depth role.
He's got some corner experience as well.
So as far as rotation is concerned, this Eagles defensive backfield, I don't have a ton of
concerns as opposed to say the linebacking for outside of a Zach bond.
When you think about one Jonathan Renard recovering from the Peck injury, Brooks Kibena had this
to say on Twitter on X with respect to Renard, Renard speaking directly to the media.
Eagles edge rusher Jonathan Renard said he does not know if he'll play Sunday.
It's up to the coaches, up to Vic Fangio.
He called the injury one of them freak things that happened while working out.
Thank God he didn't need surgery.
Thank God I didn't need surgery coming from Jonathan Renard directly.
So great news there.
I actually mistakenly thought he did have surgery previously, but he did not avoided that.
Not 100% though, but in a pretty good spot, confident where he is at as far as how he's feeling.
Now, the question is, how do the Eagles, how does the coaching staff, how does Howie Roseman,
how do they want to handle this?
That's going to be the million dollar question.
We think about pivoting though, offensively, one Sean Mannion, how he is approaching his first game,
regular season game as an offensive coordinator.
We got some interesting direct quotes from Mannion.
He had this to say about choosing where to call plays, calling plays from the coach's box,
up top, mirroring what a Vic Fangio does for the defense.
Although he alternated in the preseason, Mannion had this to say, ultimately,
felt like it was the best decision for our staff for communication with the quarterbacks,
of course, of Jalen Hurts, best decision for our team.
Went on to say, the vision is unique up there in the box.
When you think about the aerial view, the cerebral nature of Sean Mannion
as the former quarterback, not that long ago in the NFL.
I think it would do wonders, it will do wonders with Jalen Hurts.
That communication, Mannion putting himself in the best position for success.
And as the leader of the offense, being able to allow to empower other coaches,
who are, a lot of which, going to be on the sideline, more directly with the players.
Mannion had this to say, furthering his decision about communication benefits,
with him being in the box, instead of me being fixed in one place and talking to one individual,
I can be talking to everybody all the time, and then they can be distributing that information accordingly.
Sean Mannion sounds like a wily vet, as far as a coach.
He has so much experience as both a player, a quarterback, and then being under,
learning from the likes of Olafleur, the Shanahan slash McVay trees, the elite offenses in the NFL.
He has a phenomenal body of work that this Eagles team needs, to take a step as an offense,
to be a Super Bowl caliber team.
Dades of Kellen Moore, who went on to become a head coach,
in just after one season with the Philadelphia Eagles.
I think we can see that type of offense, that type of elite level output,
with Sean Mannion, leading from the top, literally, top town, onto the field.
Guys, I want to hear your thoughts though, specifically about Jonathan Grennard.
As we look to this week one, do you want Grennard to play, if he's not 100%, which he's admitted?
Ultimately, a lot of other players are not going to be 100%.
With Grennard though, his role, the meaning he brings to this edge room, to the entire defense.
If he is, as long as he, in my view, is 80%, I think that would be enough to ease his way back in.
I'd be comfortable playing him, working him back, ramping him back up, as Vic Fangio said.
If he's below 80%, I don't see why you would want to play him, if you're the Eagles,
if the production is just not going to be there, semi-consistently, even in an unlimited role.
What do you guys think though? I want to know your thoughts.
Let me know down below, and as always, GO BIRDS!
