The state fair may be over, but the ripple effects are still being felt by
a guitar prodigy in Minneapolis and the 11 year old had the opportunity of a
lifetime to perform with a pair of legendary Minnesota musicians at the
grandstand. Maury Glover gives us a front row seat to the talents of
Minneapolis Mateo in tonight's Maury stories. This one is bar a door. It's
like the eye of Sauron. Like most kids his age, Mateo Castillo Bondi's room is
filled with Legos. And then this one is also one of my favorites,
Rivendale and posters of his favorite bands. Oh yeah, this is my slash poster.
I just got this. It's signed by slash. Very cool poster. That's probably my
favorite poster actually because it looks really cool. But when it comes to
guitar heroes, oh that's Joe Satriani and see by I just saw them again. But
this is this is from the first time I saw them. He may soon have to add his
own name to the list. I don't know. I just like them because they're guitar
dudes. Are you a guitar dude? I don't know. I don't know what I am. I'm a
guitar player. I don't know how loud it's gonna be probably every day. Oh
the volumes all the way down. This sixth grader at Plymouth Middle School
should I play something grabs his ax to lay down some licks. I'm just gonna
add
which is um 8 10
12. And even though he's only been playing for a little while other hand,
then you do the sound that comes from his guitar is anything but beginner.
No, it's just really fun to play the guitar. I feel like I can get my
emotions out. Listening to this 11 year old practices craft is like witnessing
a master
and his ability to manipulate his instrument seems well beyond his years.
Frustrating sometimes and good because if I keep getting stuck on something,
then it probably will feel frustrating. But then once you push to get to the
good, then it feels good.
Okay.
Mateo's parents say growing up, he was always into music, listening to artists
like Michael Jackson and Prince.
But it wasn't until a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three years ago
that he discovered he had a gift for shredding on the guitar. I think right
away we noticed that he had an aptitude. His first rehearsal or first recital,
his first recital he played and I mean, I was just blown away. You know, he
sang, he played the guitar. It was just amazing.
Car lessons twice a week and endless hours of practice led to gigs playing
the national anthem before a go for women's basketball game
and performances with the Purple Playground at Paisley Park.
Did Matteo know he would soon be sharing the spotlight, the pair of
Minnesota icons on a much larger stage. I was shocked. I didn't think that they
would pick me for something like that. This next segment of the show, what we
want to do is we want to go back to the very beginning. When legendary
producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis put on a homecoming concert at the State
Fair, they tapped Minneapolis Matteo as he is called to help pay tribute to
Jelly Bean Johnson, who died last year and played the guitar on Janet
Jackson's hit Black Cat.
Matteo recreated the signature solo Johnson made famous in front of
thousands of fans. It was crazy. I felt like all my practice led up to that
moment
and it felt really, really good afterwards for him to be able to get up
and play in front of thousands and thousands of people like that is
something that most grown people can't do. So the fact that you know he's 11
and he can do that is it's pretty inspiring. You know, he's an inspiration.
Matteo earned rave reviews for his blue ribbon performance with many fans
calling it the highlight of the show. It seems like people liked it and yeah, I
don't really know. But Terry said that he thought that I did really good
and that I should keep playing guitar.
What Matteo plans to do, even if he's not sure he wants rock and roll
stardom. I don't want to be super duper famous. I just want to be like
pretty famous because I feel like if I'm super duper famous,
I feel like life won't be that great because a lot of people say that fame
isn't like good. But for Matteo pursuing his passion wherever it takes him
is nothing to fret over. Our hopes for the future is maybe to like write
really cool
guitar riffs and share them with the world. And I hope that I inspire a
younger generation
to stop watching brain rot and actually do something.
For more stories, Maury Glover
Box nine. He's already an inspiration. Well, he's so talented and he's wise
beyond his 11 years, right? So mature. I can't wait to see where this music
well famous, but not too famous, right? Right. Just wants to play. He wants to
just play the guitar, play music. And I hope so much talent. Yes, that we're
doing more stories on little Matteo in the future. Matteo, you stick with that.
You've got something there.
