Our top story, a powerful Labor Day weekend storm slams the Long Beach Peninsula, bringing
massive waves and flooding to the coastline.
Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf is live in Long Beach with the latest there.
Matthew, what's going on?
Well, Susan, things are calming down for now as it's no longer high tide, but just take
a look at this.
You can still see how close the waves are to this point where we are right now on the
boardwalk.
But this is from earlier.
Look at this destruction.
The waves so strong, they ripped it apart and the storm isn't done yet.
Hurricane Marie crashing into the California coast with force, a Category 1 storm hundreds
of miles offshore.
But it's powerful swells surging water into Long Beach.
Trying to pretty much move all the water because you have to see some garage got flooded.
Homeowners using sandbags and pumps to try and keep garages dry.
Drivers and cars looking for high ground.
Long Beach firefighters confirming at least a dozen homes on the peninsula impacted by
high water.
We're still dealing with the swell.
We're still dealing with the swell trajectory.
We're still dealing with that perfect alignment past the breakwater.
Really indescribable.
It's kind of sad.
A lot of people that are going to lose their homes.
The boardwalk, the only thing between Hurricane Marie and these homes.
Sometimes shooting water two stories high.
Take a closer look as this wave shakes the boardwalk like an earthquake.
Just as lifeguards try removing sections of the seawall that ripped off.
Crazy on that wall.
I seen, just eyeballing it, maybe like 20 feet after the smash into the wall.
High tides noticeable up and down the coast.
With heavy rain causing flooding from Van Nuys to Riverside.
Many in Long Beach calling this surge historic.
I've never seen the waves make it right here.
Never.
Racing for what could be another two days of impact.
The ocean's going to win.
We've been fighting the beach for 35 years.
They were moving the trucks then.
So, yeah, it's going to be what it's going to be.
Here's a live look from above on Skyfox tonight.
You can still see the massive waves and just how close they are to the homes.
And then back out here on the ground, this is a piece of that boardwalk and you can see
why it's so dangerous with the nails that are sticking out.
And then this is someone's home.
And then all the sand that's already crashed over this wall right here.
Just one of the things that they're concerned about as we move forward into this week.
Reporting live tonight in Long Beach, Matthew Seedorf, Fox 11 News.
Matthew, do you think it's true that some of these buildings, some of these houses will be destroyed?
I don't know about destroyed.
We are definitely seeing some damage.
According to firefighters, at least 12 homes have been damaged from flooding so far.
But I wouldn't be surprised, unfortunately, if there's more damage because this has been pretty intense.
Matthew Seedorf, thank you very much.
