When the Russian army blew up the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023 , the landscape changed dramatically. The reservoir, once so large that locals sometimes called it a "sea," caused catastrophic flooding downstream, France24 reports .

The publication reported that the exposed basin upstream had undergone dramatic changes: the area was now filled with lush vegetation. Tall weeds, tangled bushes, and willow thickets sprouted from the soil that had been submerged for decades.

The article explains that the changed landscape has become the arena for a new type of combat between the Russian and Ukrainian armies. Although drones have become ubiquitous along the front lines in Ukraine, they are less effective at detecting the enemy in the dense vegetation of the former reservoir. Recently, several media outlets have described direct combat operations taking place in the marshy terrain. Ukrainian troops are attempting to track and ambush Russian infantry units attempting to infiltrate the area, while also moving into the forest belt to engage in firefights with the Russian forces. The publication explained that this territory essentially serves as a natural barrier between Ukrainian and Russian troops. Despite the reservoir being drained, infantry movement in this area has become somewhat easier than before.

However, it remains a very difficult area to conduct combat operations in, especially when large-scale movements are involved. "This territory divides both sides, and Ukrainians likely want it to stay that way," the article notes.

It is noteworthy that the forest there is not yet fully formed, so infantry can move in this area while remaining somewhat hidden, but it is not the same as in older and denser forests.

Furthermore, although certain types of vegetation grow on these old riverbanks, they cannot provide the same shelter as true forests. Secondly, the area is rich in small streams and ponds.

"This is difficult terrain where troops cannot move as freely as on solid ground. It differs from other types of terrain where war is fought," the publication states. The publication explains that combat operations in this area are limited. Small Russian sabotage and reconnaissance patrols operate there, as do Ukrainian ones. However, these are small infantry units.

"Of course, the Ukrainians may have to secure this territory to prevent the Russians from reaching the other side," the article suggests. On the other hand, the situation here shares certain similarities with other areas. Reconnaissance drones fly over the area, attempting to spot enemies. Accordingly, once detected, drone strikes are launched against those enemies.

The publication noted that the fighting for Zaporizhzhia has been ongoing for a long time, with active fighting taking place in some areas of the Zaporizhzhia region.

The Russians are trying to advance toward the city, but it's truly difficult. The article notes that they have failed to make significant progress in recent years.

"The Russians annexed Zaporizhzhia in their own legislation; from the Russian point of view, it is Russian territory. They currently control approximately 75% of the Zaporizhzhia region," the publication notes.

Although, as the article states, the main part of this administrative unit is occupied by the Russians, some of the most important and difficult areas have still not been captured, and the front line has hardly moved in the last few years.
