A major New York Yankees move is incoming and this was inevitable.
As right now, the Yankees are making a decision that many fans are going to have differing
opinions on because it involves the most polarizing player within the organization and none other
than Anthony Volpe.
And we're going to break down what this move is, what is about to happen, why it's about
to happen, and all the plans going forward for the Yankees.
But guys, before we do that, make sure to go ahead and subscribe to Yankees Digest if
you are part of that 66% that is not currently subscribed.
It's completely free to do.
Videos are every single day and you guys have been crushing with the support recently.
I really appreciate it.
I'm going to respond to all the great comments you guys have been leaving.
Thank you so much.
But let's jump into it because we're here to talk about Anthony Volpe and the evident
move that's coming because this man's coming back, man.
It's so clear that he's going to come back up to the majors.
Frankly, we've been waiting knowing this is likely going to happen.
First of all, we have to talk about the obvious.
George Lombard Jr. is hurt and Aaron Boone has kept him out of games for a while.
That's fine.
He's going to be back.
He's going to be okay.
And he's going to go back to being the team's shortstop.
Yes, he's come down to earth from the incredible start he had, but still, he's a great fielder.
I know he had the six straight errors in the games.
I don't really care.
I don't think that's indicative of him.
I think he was probably already a little banged up when that was happening.
And one of them really was not his fault.
He tried to save a play and it just didn't really go his way.
But overall, I digress.
When it comes to Volpe, there's a lot of differing opinions on him because, frankly, he was not
good this season.
He had a 240 batting average and a 646 OPS.
And the crazy part is, that's one of the better numbers that he's ever put up in the majors.
And because of the fact that his fielding was not as bad as it has been in years past,
there is a lot of thought that goes into, okay, well, maybe Volpe actually can do something.
Maybe we can put him in at double A. I was reading the minors right there.
At second base.
And maybe that works.
If Jazz is going to be a platoon player for a while now, maybe the move is to put Anthony
Volpe at second base at times against left-handed pitching.
The Yankees don't have a ton of right-handed pitchers and, frankly, it does make some sense.
But there was further discussion on this.
Jorge Castillo did mention that Anthony Volpe left last night's game in triple A with a
right forearm contusion, a source tells ESPN.
He was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning and initially stayed in the game, stealing
a base and lining out in his next at-bat before he exited in the sixth inning.
Now, Bobby Malone also mentioned that Volpe had been hitting home runs and the best thing
for Volpe and Dominguez is to start fresh on another team next season and for the Yankees
to get what they can get and move on.
I think a lot of us have seen that sentiment and started to agree with it.
I'm not going to sit here and disagree with it.
But at the same time, this season, I don't see Anthony Volpe coming up and being an everyday
player.
I know Aaron Boone is an affinity for Volpe.
There's no doubt about that.
But when we look at Volpe and when we look at where he is, I think there is a genuine
argument that he can be a better platoon player than some of the guys the Yankees have.
Someone like Ahmed Rosario.
Now, Rosario was good with the Yankees last year.
He was hitting lefties, doing his thing at a three or three average against lefties and
it was working.
And even a little bit this season, Ahmed Rosario was actually playing quite well and was an
effective piece for the Yankees overall.
I mean, it wasn't a long period of time, but it was a brief period of time that he was
actually playing quite well.
But here's the thing.
Rosario has not kept that up throughout the season.
He's now at a negative .2, more on the 2.38 batting average and a 7.05 OPS.
The numbers are similar to Volpe's and on some areas they are better, but he has not
been cutting it at third base, which is the main thing the Yankees have Rosario for, is
to play third base when it's against a lefty and Ryan McMahon is not going to be in there.
The Yankees are still using Rosario in that role.
Nothing has changed, but he has not been as effective.
And because he has not been as effective, there's a lot of thought into maybe not keeping
Ahmed Rosario in this team and going a different route.
Going with Volpe.
Now, Volpe has not played great over the course of this year in the minors at all.
It has not been excellent baseball, but it hasn't been bad.
2.60 average and 8.43 OPS.
I mean, you'd be thrilled with any MLB player doing that.
So it's safe to be happy about that now, especially because over the last 30 days, he does have
a plus 147 weighted runs created plus in the minor leagues.
So frankly, he has something to work with there.
And now with the forearm injury, there was some concern.
He was instantly back in the lineup.
So there's no real reason to be concerned about Anthony Volpe going forward.
He's going to play.
And I know that we have some bad memories of Volpe playing through injuries like last
season playing for the torn labrum.
But at the end of the day, it's a forearm bruise that he got hit with a pitch for.
It's a lot different than tearing a muscle.
So obviously it's good to see that Volpe is all right.
You never want anyone to get injured.
And on top of that, again, I honestly think it makes sense to call Volpe back up.
I am not again.
I'm not going to say start him over jazz, but sometimes he would work as a pinch hitter
or just as a regular platoon guy.
Not going to say start him at third base over Ryan McMahon because there's no way he can
handle throwing from third base.
I'm definitely not going to say start over George Lombard.
Lombard has been great for the most part, and he's going to be healthy again soon.
But also, who is the Yankees backup shortstop?
I guess Rosario and McMahon are kind of there.
And then there's Jose Caballero, of course, but Caballero, I don't really ever see the
Yankees putting him a shortstop.
It's on.
It's more just like he's going to play wherever they want to put him in for because they want
to use him as a pinch runner and just a guy who they could put in.
He's a plug and play guy.
It's always what the Yankees have seen Caballero as they've never really went away from that,
except for a very small period of time when they deviated to that.
But it really wasn't or deviated away from Volpe and went towards Caballero.
I should say that makes way more sense.
But frankly, when we look at Volpe, when we look at Caballero, when we look at Lombard,
Lombard's obviously the best option.
We know what the Yankees want out of Caballero.
They want to be able to play multiple positions.
And frankly, if you do replace Rosario with Volpe, Caballero can handle third base.
And I would rather Caballero than Rosario because Caballero is a better base runner
and he's a better fielder.
So I know he's come back down to earth a lot.
But still, at the same time, if you put Caballero there, he's got a great arm and can easily
handle third base.
He's a great base runner.
So frankly, the Yankees do get some positives there.
And then if you have Volpe, you can play shortstop while Caballero also can do it.
You have Volpe who can play second base, and obviously, again, Caballero can do that too.
You do have a lot of fluidity, more than what you have with Rosario, who has not been fielding
well.
So I do think the best move fluidity-wise is to bring Anthony Volpe back up onto this
team.
I see it as a likely option, especially we know how the Yankees feel about Anthony Volpe.
This man loves him.
Like we know this.
We know how the Yankees feel about Volpe.
So am I talking myself into it because I think it's going to happen?
Maybe.
But also, it's not hard to talk yourself into replacing Ahmed Rosario out of the team.
Like I just, he hasn't been good.
He's not been useful.
He hasn't been doing what he's there to do.
He's there to hit lefties.
If he's not going to hit lefties, Volpe's hitting home run after home run after home
run, just shot a 408 bomb not too long ago.
I'd rather Volpe be up.
It might raise the trade value as well from what Bobby Malone was saying.
It makes sense.
I know some people don't want to hear it.
They don't want to watch Volpe play anymore.
I understand that.
Last year sucked.
The last two years before that were not good.
But still, he is the best option as a platoon bat.
And frankly, if it even raises his trade value by like a modicum, then it's worth making
the move.
I frankly don't see a reason not to at this point, because it's not like they have a ton
of options.
They don't.
And it's also not like they have a surplus of right-handed hitters.
They don't have any right-handed hitters.
So because of that, Rosario is one of them.
He's not hitting.
Volpe's one of them.
He hasn't hit much throughout his career, but he's a better fielder this season and
he's a better base runner.
And the hitting is remarkable.
I mean, again, look at the stats.
We see right here, 238.
Volpe's got a 240.
Yeah, the OPS is worse.
Obviously a problem.
Go back to that for a second.
Base percentage, 287.
Very bad.
Rosario's on base percentage.
A little bit better.
You can go either way, but Volpe has more of the intangibles.
So I would go Volpe.
What do you guys think?
