A massive collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border was first detected as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake — but within hours, the USGS reclassified the signal as a landslide. What followed became one of the most destructive Himalayan disasters in years.
In this video, DiscoverTube investigates how a rock-and-ice avalanche near Langtang triggered a catastrophic debris flow and flood that travelled nearly 100 kilometres downstream, destroyed critical infrastructure and overwhelmed communities far from the original collapse.
But the most alarming part may be what happened next.
Debris from the disaster blocked river channels near the Nepal–Tibet border, creating a new body of water where no lake existed before. Chinese authorities later warned that millions of cubic metres of water were accumulating behind unstable debris, forcing rescue operations near the border to stop because of the risk of another sudden flood.
