🚃🏔️ Bernina Glaciers : ABe 4/4 I 30 & 34 (29 and 30 July 2026)
During 5 weekends in the summer, the Rhätische Bahn runs a historical train composed of the ABe 4/4 I 30 and 34 as RE29 on the Bernina line. Despite being a historical train, it is like the other trains in that it can be taken with a regular ticket without reservation. This train is called the ‘Bernina Glaciers’.
I then hurry to get ahead of the train as it approaches to see it in nice curves. I go back up to Alp Grüm to see it one last time that day.
The next day I see it leaving the depot in Pontresina from the train I stayed in until Celerina Staz. I see it pass the station for the first time without stopping and then a bit further on when it returns. I catch up with the train again at Alp Grüm and then get on it to go down to Cavaglia. Luckily there were very few people in that part of the train which allowed me to film from both sides and also a bit of the inside. I also film the departure from Cavaglia. After getting back on the train to Alp Grüm I walk up to the restaurant not to eat (I just had bread and cheese while waiting for the train in Cavaglia) but to film it from a distance in Cavaglia and then in the curve after Stablini, I move to the other side of the building and film the arrival in the Alp Grüm curve from above. I take the train before it leaves to go to Bernina Lagalb where I can also see it coming from a distance and then get on the train until its last stop in Pontresina. There are still a few manoeuvres at the station to get the train back into the depot.
This year the schedule and route have been changed: it now leaves Pontresina in the morning for St. Moritz and then heads towards Poschiavo, after which it goes back up the Bernina line to return to Pontresina.
