The West Coast Volcanoes Are Hiding One of America's Most Dangerous Secrets

Earth is moving beneath some of the most closely monitored regions in North America.

In this video, we investigate 20 geological developments across the West Coast, Yellowstone, and the Cascade Range — from the Cascadia Subduction Zone and California’s active fault systems to earthquake swarms, ground deformation, hydrothermal explosions, and active volcanoes.

Cascadia is capable of producing a magnitude 9 earthquake, while California’s San Andreas and surrounding faults continue accumulating and redistributing tectonic stress. Across the Cascades, volcanoes such as Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, and Mount Baker remain under constant surveillance.

At Yellowstone, scientists continue tracking earthquakes, swarms, uplift, and hydrothermal activity, including a June 2026 hydrothermal explosion at Biscuit Basin.

None of this means a major earthquake or eruption is imminent. Yellowstone and the Cascade volcanoes remain at normal background levels.

Instead, scientists are watching for the moment when normal geological behavior begins to change.
