California Cliffs Warned Us Days Before Collapsing

California’s coastal cliffs may look completely still—but scientists have discovered that some of them begin sending measurable warning signs hours or even days before they collapse.

In this video, we investigate a four-year Scripps Institution of Oceanography study that tracked cliff failures along the California coast. Using ultra-sensitive tiltmeters, extensometers, seismometers, GPS, lidar, and wave sensors, researchers were able to detect tiny movements building beneath the surface before monitored collapses occurred.

One of the most dramatic cases happened in Del Mar. On April 19, 2024, sensors detected accelerating movement inside the cliff and coastal managers were notified. Two days later, at around 5:00 a.m., an estimated 200 tons of material broke away and crashed onto the beach below.

Scientists also found that rainfall, groundwater, wave erosion, widening cracks, and microscopic ground deformation can all play a role in pushing unstable cliffs toward failure. During the study, five collapses were monitored at Del Mar and San Elijo State Beach—and sensors detected movement before every one of them.

Now researchers are exploring whether these hidden signals could eventually become part of a real California coastal landslide early-warning system.

Could scientists one day warn beachgoers before a dangerous cliff actually collapses?
