Wow. Nice and quiet at L. A. X. Yeah, look at that. People mover. I have not
seen it going. Um, it's still early. It's seven days before the holiday
weekend, by the way, right? So it's a ready set. Go. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Thanks
for being with us. This is a good day. Like Jen Lombard's is Bob DeCastro.
Let's go over to Maria for checking this forecast cooling off a little
bit. Yeah. Good morning to you. We are very excited about this. Actually,
this change and we had advertised it after a very hot August. We are now
finally enjoying the sea breeze and the effects of the onshore flow. You can
see by the arrows where that air is coming from the West Northwest, and
that is bringing in a slightly cooler air mass. And so that's the good news.
That big dome of high pressure that was in control of our weather has really
pushed off to the east and took a lot of that humidity with it. So right now
we're looking very comfortable conditions. It's not cool conditions in
Frazier Park. It's 41 degrees right now. It's 56 in Santa Cruda. Look at
big there. 47 degrees. That's kind of chilly. 60 in Corona. I think you'll
need a sweater to that 75 degrees warmer in Palm Springs. High
temperatures today will range anywhere from 101 in Palm Springs. Hot and dry.
Not as humid, though. That's a good news. 87 in the high desert to that 72
up into the mountains. Some breezes increasing as typically it would with
an onshore flow in that sea breeze over the mountains and deserts in the
afternoon. 89. Not bad for the valleys in an empire 82 for downtown L. A.
That's below the average to that 75 along the coast. We'll talk more about
the upcoming holiday weekend forecast, and it's a complicated one. I'll go
over it in just a bit. But first, let's check in on traffic with stew and the
crew up in sky Fox do. Good morning. Hey, good morning, Maria. Good morning,
everybody. Take a look at that five drive. I was just giving it all those
props and saying how wonderful that five drive is in Congress. Wow, I wish I
could say the same thing about what's going on here from the 1 34 out to the
1 10 southbound. Those are the headlights you see right there. Very
slow and go. You're not gonna be doing freeway speeds at all. So keep that one
in mind on that southbound five from the 1 34 out to the 1 10. Now, if it's
northbound as you're right, you're starting out really slow coming out of
Lincoln Heights area, but it does definitely start to open up and loosen
up as you make your way farther north as you pass that 1 34 into the Burbank
wide open and moving. Well, send it back to you on the studio. Good morning,
Bobby. Good morning, sweet. Thank you so much. Let's get to break you news in
Norwalk. One person dead following a violent multi vehicle crash. L. A
County Sheriff's deputies say the crash happened just before one this morning
at Rosecrans and Longworth Avenues. Two vehicles collided, causing both to roll
over several times. A third vehicle then struck multiple cars in all 16
vehicles were involved, mostly parked cars. Investigators are looking into
whether racing may have caused this crash. More breaking news. Meantime,
overnight in San Fernando, police shoot and kill an assault suspect who is
allegedly armed with a shovel. We've had Mario live at the scene for the
past several hours. He has the very latest on the investigation. Police say
the man who was shot and killed was reportedly attacking a woman with a
shovel. In fact, they say there were a total of three victims and just behind
those police lights there, those flashing lights. That's where officers
responded and confronted the man before shots were fired here along third and
McKay. This is still a very active scene, and in the video you can see the
man's covered body in this alleyway and a shovel lying just feet away. They
started about 11 45 last night with a 911 call. Someone reporting a woman was
being attacked by a shovel wielding suspect. Investigators haven't yet
released the specific details of what happened during that confrontation with
police or what immediately led officers to fire. But witnesses say
several shots were fired and heard here in this area. We also heard from the
interim police chief of the San Fernando Police Department. Take a
listen. The call reported that a man armed with a shovel had attacked a
woman in the area. Officers located that man, and during that encounter,
they discharged their firearms.
The man received emergency medical treatment on scene but was unresponsive
and pronounced dead on the scene. Probably 10 15 shots. And that's when
we've seen the police officers start CPR on the man. I was in shock. You
know, I know a lot of people in the community. Um, we're pretty united. We
know one one another. So it's kind of worried. The woman who police say was
being attacked now being interviewed at the police station along with two other
people. Police are describing as victims of this attack. We can tell you
that no officers were injured. Paramedics responded, but that man was
pronounced dead here at the scene. He hasn't been publicly identified, and
this morning the investigation continues. The California Department
of Justice is leading the investigation for now in the heart of downtown San
Fernando. I'm Mario Ramirez back to you, and we've got more breaking news
from overnight. A police pursuit that began in Long Beach leads to gunfire
and a crash in downtown Los Angeles. Christopher Harto joins us live from
downtown with more Christy.
Good morning. Not only was this a wild pursuit, it was also a very dangerous
one. Several people have been taken to the hospital. Traffic has been snarled
up and take a look. That is where it ended. You can see where the suspect
vehicle crashed into a pole also sheared a fire hydrant. People are
without power. L. A. D. W. P. S. Working to restore it. But I want to
show you video of this. It is a Long Beach police cruiser, which had a
bullet hole in the windshield. It was just towed from the scene here. We're
told no officer was hurt, but police say they did recover weapon here at
11th and Santa Fe, but did not specify the type, but say they do believe it is
a weapon used when all of this started. Take a look. Police say just before 12
30 this morning, there was a shooting in Long Beach on the 200 block of
Aquarium Way. Paramedics took two people to the hospital with what police
described as non life threatening injuries. Another person was treated at
the scene, but the suspect was nowhere to be found. Soon after, officers say
they spotted the suspect silver Honda near Burnett and Pacific and a chase
began. Then on the 7 10 freeway, police say the suspect fired rounds and Long
Beach police officers fired back. That's why the stretch of 7 10 is closed
this morning is detective search for casings cutting off a major highway
during the morning commute. The pursuit stretched all the way into downtown L.
And ended, police say, when the suspect ran into a pole and hydrant here at
11th just off of Santa Fe and Olympic water was gushing and the power is out
to about 120 customers and L. A. D. W. P. Crews are still working to repair
the damage. The suspect was injured in the crash, but police say he was not
shot. He has been taken to the hospital, we're told, and is now facing a very
long list of charges back out of here alive again. No officer was hurt, but
this little stretch of Santa Fe Boulevard here has multiple cameras. In
fact, there's one on this building. There's another on a pole over there,
so police will no doubt have video. If these cameras are, in fact, working,
there possibly could also be dash cam video. And again, the suspect has been
taken to the hospital and we're told we'll be facing a long list of charges
live in downtown L. A. I'm Christopher Harder listening back to you. All
right, Christie, thank you so much. Let's get to this developing news.
Sentencing is set for October in the murder of Tupac Shakur. 30 years later,
a Las Vegas jury has found 63 year old Dwayne Davis guilty of first degree
murder in the 1996 shooting. Prosecutors say Davis orchestrated the
drive by shooting and provided the gun but did not pull the trigger. Jurors
reached the verdict in less than three hours. He faces life in prison without
parole. Christine Divine spoke to a witness who testified during the trial.
Tupac's fellow Outlaws rapper Malcolm Greenidge, whose artist name is Edie
Amin, was in the car behind Tupac the night of the murder. And here's part of
that interview. What are your hopes or thoughts for sentencing for Dwayne
Kifidi Davis? You know, I really don't have any. You know what I mean? I
know this is this is above my pay grade, so to speak. This is up to the
judge, jury and the people that have been required to do this job. I don't
have any personal hopes. I don't take any solace in the fact that this man
has been convicted of my friend's murder. This is a, you know, what's
left of his life is potentially gone forever. Tupac, this is not bringing
Tupac back. Justice for Tupac would have been eradicating some of these
conditions that led to him being murdered on the Vegas Strip. Justice
for Tupac would have been he was out on bail at the time for a crime that he
vehemently denied until the day he died. And he didn't get justice in that
case as well. And so there's no victory party, at least for me. I'm very,
very happy for his friends, family fans and the people that needed closure.
But for me personally, this is this is not something that I look. I look
forward to or I'm happy about this. There's just a lot of darkness in this
whole ordeal. You think Tupac was only 25 years old when he died? You wonder
what he would have been if he had, you know, lived and survived. And all these
people, by the way, we're talking about her like in their sixties. Now you can
catch Christine's full interview soon on Fox. L. A. Is YouTube page. The
singer known as David entered a new not guilty plea to charges that he murdered
and dismembered a 14 year old girl, Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The 21 year
old, whose real name is David Burke, is now being represented by a Los Angeles
County public defender. His two private attorneys withdrawing from the case for
unspecified reasons. Prosecutors say they'll also proceed on charges that he
sexually abused the victim. Authorities say they believe Rivas Hernandez was
killed because she planned to expose their relationship. A status conference
was scheduled for October. We have more. Good day late after the break
tube.
And welcome back to you. I'm meteorologist Maria Paul Bond. We've
got a really nice day ahead. In fact, the next several days almost perfect.
That big dome of high pressure is well to our east right now. We have a trough
of lower pressure to our north that's giving us that onshore flow, and it's
to the weekend when we get some effects from this tropical system. This is
tropical storm Marie that has developed in the East Pacific, so we're gonna
start to tap into that subtropical moisture, maybe get a little more
humidity, and there's even a chance for some showers as we get into this
weekend, Saturday, Sunday, with some higher surf rolling in generated by
these systems in the Pacific. So we've got that one system that could give us
some rain. It has increased a little bit in terms of the chance 30% at this
point for the downtown L. A. Area Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 30% through
that holiday. So you might want to just have some alternate plans on Monday.
Just in case you had plans to go out to the beach, we could see some light
showers along with some very high surf. In the meantime, today, sunshine 77 in
Inglewood, 104 in Indio to that 97 in Las Vegas. If you're headed to Sin City,
here's your day planner for Thousand Oaks. Beautiful. Lots of sunshine
already with those temperatures in the upper seventies at one p.m. Big bear
much cooler 68 degrees at one p.m. So slightly below the average now, with all
our highs Riverside getting to around 84 at noontime. Not too bad. So
different from last week. And as we get towards the beach Laguna Beach, we've
got some partly cloudy skies, so some patchy clouds in that marine layer,
giving way to sunshine and around 75 degrees later at that lunch hour. Let's
go back to stew up in Sky Fox. Get another update on our traffic on this
early Tuesday. Stew. Good morning. Hey, good morning, Maria. Good morning,
everybody. Sky Fox traffic brought to us by my home sold five freeway Paco Mia.
That's where we are. It's Pacoima. Yes, I know. It's Pacoima. It's your usual
slow and go as you make your way south on that five freeway once you pass that
1 18. Why? I just don't know why, but it is always very slow and go here.
Maybe it's all the decisions on those off ramps, but by the time you pass
that 1 70 freeway, it's a miracle. The freeway opens up and is moving very
well through the Burbank area. But expect delays as you make your way into
Glendale. Take a look at that northbound wide open, moving wild
traffic, hot spots fresh off the grill. We're gonna share those with you right
now. Hi, I'm Adrian with my home sold and we want to buy your house. We buy
any house in any condition. No commissions, no closing costs and no
repairs. Go to my home sold dot com for a free same day cash offer. That's my
home sold dot com.
Yeah, from a boys and girls club in southern California to U. C. Berkeley.
One local team has a dream to become a physician assistant and make health
care more accessible. Roxy is here with this inspiring story. Good morning. Hey
there. Good morning. This teenager has already made a big impact on her
community, and now she's being recognized for it. She found a second
home at the boys and girls club and turned that support into a mission to
help others. At 17 years old, Haley Castaneda is already thinking big, big
college, big career and a bigger purpose. I'm going to UC Berkeley in
the fall to study public health, and I'm super excited. I want to become a
physician assistant either in neurology or pediatrics. But before Berkeley,
there was the boys and girls club. Haley joined when she was just six, and
for the next 11 years, it became a place to learn, make friends and find
her voice. I actually started in their summer program, and so I fell in love
with the club, just the environment and meeting so many different people. She
took advantage of everything the club had to offer, and then she started
giving back. She spent hours tutoring younger students and became a student
board member. Then, during her sophomore year, Haley found a cause
that would change her path. A woman named Vanessa Decker. She reached out
to a teacher at my school at Santa Monica High School, and she talked
about a foundation, the Glimmer's Childhood Cancer Foundation, which was
the foundation started by her daughter, who died from osteosarcoma. Haley was
all in. I did a lot of fundraising, and I also had a high school club. I
created the first high school club to support the foundation's goals. I
worked really closely with Vanessa, and that work helped lead to a massive
milestone. Around a year and a half ago, we donated $250,000 as a
foundation to UCLA Children's Mattel Hospital for advancing cancer research,
which I was really proud of because I got to attend the check signing event
and actually observed pediatric cancer research with Dr. Nowicki, which was a
really cool experience for me. For Haley, it was proof that even as a
she could make a tangible difference, and it helped shape the kind of health
care provider she wants to become. I want to be a provider in underserved
communities that can be an advocate, but also understand and really make
people feel cared for and seen and heard. Now, Haley's own future is
getting a boost. She's one of 50 Boys and Girls Club members nationwide to
receive a $5000 judgment free generation scholarship from Planet Fitness money
that can help take some of that financial pressure off her first year
at Berkeley. I felt like I had no chance at college because my parents
didn't ever go to college. So I'm a first generation student, and I would
just say reach out to those resources. And she has some advice for other
first generation students getting ready to take that next step. I spent a lot
of time researching volunteer opportunities, community service
opportunities, because not only do you build relationship with people in those
fields, but you also get tips and tricks from those people. Wise like
words that help you as well. Haley says her own journey is proof. You don't
have to wait until you're older to make a difference. So many programs they've
helped me even get into college, especially as a first generation
student. That organization is probably one of the most like resourceful. They
give you so many resources like S. A. T. Prep college bound program. Yeah,
they're all over America. Just get involved. So Haley says, take advantage
of the resources around you. For example, she talked about the Planet
Fitness Summer Pass program. I didn't know about this, but it actually offers
teens 14 to 19 of free gym membership during the summer months. So I know
we're wrapping things up this year, but something maybe you can look into next
year. And she says to really stand out, you really have to find a passion. You
dedicate yourself to it. You showcase it. That's more important than having a
list of places you're volunteering for, which I remember going through this
process. Everyone was trying to volunteer at so many places to have this
long list of this. I did that. I did that. And it's almost like the opposite.
Pick one or maybe two things and really invest in it to show that you're
passionate about it. You've built it from the ground up. That's more
important when it comes to colleges. So look at how far that carried her. You
know, I was just having a great that conversation with my daughter, my 10
year old. I said, Find something you're really into and start already, right?
Start to kind of build it and think about it because you're not really just
going through the motions. You're actually really making you care, making
a difference. And that really, really shows. Yes. Instead of like 20 places,
right? That's more for you than it would be for the organization. Exactly. So
Haley, good luck at Berkeley. You're gonna do great already. So best of luck
to you already off the races. All right, take a short break. We'll be right
back. Good morning. Welcome to good daily. It's 7 30 on this September 1st
just days away from the Labor Day holiday. Uh, welcome to good daily.
Let's get to Maria with a look at the forecast there. Good morning to you.
Hello. I'm meteorologist Maria Koban. Indeed, we are starting a new month
today. So happy September 1st. The meteorological start to the fall season.
Actually, we've got some beautiful weather to start the new month with
lots of sunshine, but temperatures staying in that comfortable zone just
slightly or near the average. We have some winds that are picking up in the
afternoon for the mountains and deserts, but staying below advisory criteria.
So typical onshore flow for us. And then as we look ahead to the holiday
weekend, then some changes as we get into Saturday, Sunday, even Monday,
with some impacts from a tropical system. We're watching tropical storm
Marie, which did form last night, and that will bring in some high surf as
well. As we get to the weekend, I'll go over all that those details in just a
bit, but it could bring us some showers and we haven't seen rain in a while in
downtown L. A. So we could use a little bit of rain. It's been 142 days
straight since we saw a raindrop in downtown L. A. That was back on April
12th. The longest streak, by the way, 219 days. That was back in 1997. All
right, temperature wise, it is cooler at this hour than it was yesterday. And
then if you remember yesterday morning, we were saying it was cooler than the
day before. So, yes, we are headed in that right direction going down much
better than the heat waves that we have seen five degrees cooler in Burbank
than yesterday. Same for Santa Monica, seven degrees cooler in Riverside. And
as we take a look at the high temperatures, we ended with 86
yesterday for the last day of the month, and you could see every single
day practically has been above average today. 82. That's below the
normal 85 for downtown and our sunset time 7 19. When I come back, I'll show
you the 70 forecast. Plus, of course, your pictures in today's TV shout outs.
But first do in Sky Fox with a look at our traffic. Hey, Stu. Hey, good
morning, Maria. Skybox made our way over to the quenga past. I'm gonna show
you that one on one going through Hollywood headlights. Those are gonna
be southbound one on one coming out of the valley down into the Hollywood
area. Northbound wide open, moving well through the Hollywood area. Indeed,
up that hill and into the valley southbound this portion of the ride
looking fantastic. But just keep in mind, by the time you hit Vermont,
you're gonna hit a little bit of that slow and go as you make your way into
the Echo Park area over to the 1 10. An early morning wrong way driver crash
that has cleared. But right now the ride looking okay, and then they get a
little bit of that slow and go in that morning sun. Senator back to you on the
studio. Good morning. All right, Stu. Good morning to you. So happening today,
L. A county officials are set to announce storm preparations ahead of a
potentially historic El Nino season. Emergency leaders are expected to
outline flood control and evacuation plans with special focus on local burn
scar areas. Forecasters say there is a 90% chance of a strong El Nino
developing this fall and winter, bringing above average rainfall,
bringing the press conference live. Once it happens at 11 o'clock this
morning. Meantime, none of this Hollywood could see more productions
returning home under a rare bipartisan push for a national film tax credit.
California Senator Adam Schiff and President Trump are both endorsing the
new federal incentive. The goal of the plan is to counter foreign tax breaks,
protect local crew jobs and boost domestic production nationwide. The
Motion Picture Association is on board with this as California weighs
expanding its own tax credits. Legendary singer Lionel Richie is in the
hospital after performing in ST Louis over the weekend. TMZ reports Richie
appeared to struggle toward the end of a show performing his final song while
seated. The 77 year old's hospitalization comes after he became
dizzy during a show in Minnesota. Back in June, he's still scheduled to
perform in Las Vegas this October and November. One of my favorite
performers. I know. Yeah, this song is just absolutely. He's great. Country
music icon Dolly Parton, who passed away last week at 80 once called
solving home. Now her 1920s farmhouse in the Danish inspired Santa Barbara
County town is on the market for nearly $2 million. This is the home that's
being listed on the village properties website. The home features small
tributes to the legendary artist. Oh, I still can't believe it's true. I know.
I know. And then to find out that she had, uh, cancer. That's right. Uh, you
know, nobody hates kids more than all of us here, right? No kidding. We hate
it. But we also use this time to spread awareness. Um, thank you for your
messages that you sent me at 6 45. I already checked instagram about the
statistics. September is blood cancer awareness month. You'll notice I'm
wearing a very bright green today. It's the symbolic color for non
Hodgkin's lymphoma. It's the cancer I was diagnosed with in 2019. Jen is
wearing orange symbolic color for leukemia. So and bob, you know, lymphoma
very well. Your brother and father had been diagnosed with lymphoma. So the
two most common blood cancers, as I mentioned, are lymphoma and leukemia.
And every three minutes, someone in the U. S. Is diagnosed with blood cancer.
A viewer wrote me a message at 6 45 telling me that their friend was just
diagnosed with blood cancer over the weekend. Thinking of you and your
friend right now. I know bob has two family members that were diagnosed with
lymphoma and leukemia is also one of the most common pediatric cancers. And
September, along with being blood cancer awareness month is pediatric
cancer awareness month. I'm involved with an organization called Hyundai
Hope on Wheels. And since 1998, they've given over $303 million towards
pediatric cancer relief, research and resources. So when you see a high five
symbol, just like Jackson and Isabella, just know that that's a symbol for
hope. And the gold ribbon is also associated with the pediatric cancer
symbol as well. So many of our viewers drive Hyundai's every time you buy a
Hyundai, a portion of that sale goes towards Hyundai Hope on Wheels. I'm
also on the local board for Blood Cancer United, formerly known as L. L.
S. And each year I know each of you have attended a light the night
ceremony. Each year we fundraise for our awareness celebration in November
called Light the Night. A white lantern symbolizes survivorship. The red one
you see there is a supporter for the cause and of someone they care about.
And the gold lantern symbolizes in remembrance and loving memory of a
loved one who passed away from cancer. So the goal is to see less and less
gold lanterns in the sea of lanterns and more and more white lanterns. I
want to just show everybody again. This is our time to make sure to check. I
didn't know what the symptoms for lymphoma were, and I wish that somebody
had this graphic up when I was diagnosed because I was diagnosed
misdiagnosed a handful of times. If you have face, neck, groin swelling and or
feel lumps, you should get that checked out. If you have night sweats
consistently, you should go and see a doctor. Rapid, unexplained weight loss
be mindful of that extreme itchiness. I really want to emphasize the extreme
here because I have a lot of people message me and saying I'm itchy. When I
tell you the extreme itchiness, I woke up in the middle of the night and felt
like red ants were in my bloodstream. That's how bad all over all over,
especially like your thighs, your neck and chest, your arms and extreme fatigue
as well, where you almost feel like you cannot get out of bed. If it persists,
these are all symptoms. You should go and see a doctor. You said you said you
actually noticed it when you were doing a junket. Yeah, when I went traveling,
like kind of exacerbates the symptoms. So I went to Orlando to interview Tom
Hanks and Tim Allen for Toy Story four. And after that trip, I was so exhausted
and being on the plane. My face just swelled up so much more. I was sitting
in the edit Bay with our editor Luke at the time, and I said, God, my face looks
so swollen and the rest of my body is skinny. I look like a Pixar character
and he was being really nice. He goes, Oh, maybe you just had like, you know,
it's bad lighting, you know, something. But I saw it and that's when I thought,
no, something is really wrong. I need to go and like I have to get answers. And
ironically, I had many blood tests. Blood tests do not tell you if you have
blood cancer, only an X ray or scan. They have to see inside of you to see if
you have blood cancer. And then they do obviously the biopsy to confirm it. But
the scan and an X ray are the ways to see if you have like a tumor there in
your lymph areas and lymph nodes. So obviously I received treatment at City
of Hope. Many of you know this already. So shout out to them for helping save
my life. We have some celebrities that are blood cancer survivors. Do we have
that? Dave Roberts? Did you know he's a he's a lymphoma survivor? Yeah, stars.
They're just like just some of us, right? Jane Fonda, lymphoma, fellow
lymphoma. Mhm. Michael C. Hall from Dexter. Another lymphoma. Lymphoma is
you call them. I call them my homies. Jeff Bridges. Jeff Bridges. Also want to
mention Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 is also but these are all lymphoma
lymphoma survivors. So and thank you for bringing attention to it. Yeah, thank
you for letting every year. And I'm very grateful to good daily for always
letting me because I wish that someone had told me what these symptoms were
and I would have said, check, check, check. Symptom awareness is key. All
right. Entertainment sponsored by Yamaba Resort and Casino. Let's check
in on our poll, which this one was blowing up to see people love to hate.
They love to hate. Yeah. What is your least favorite music genre? Can I get a
little bed music? Thank you. What is this? All right, what do we got? Let's
see. Let's see. This is just not a country. It's not a country town. Stage
coach. I love stage coach. But also country has become very pop. It is
become pop. It has. You're right. Taylor Swift songs are. That's right. Remember,
this is what's your least favorite music genre. Number two is electronic.
Yeah, electronic. Okay, we got some comments. Olivia in Long Beach. I
personally think electronic isn't the best for me. I prefer K pop. Hmm.
Produce a car. I wonder why hate on me if you want. By the way, love. Good day
L. A. Oh, yeah. Okay. So Christmas Santa Ana. I've been a musician since
I was five and I was a music major. I love almost all music except metal.
However, I probably listen to country the least out of these choice. I tell
you those heavy metal singers, they can belt out. It's pretty hard to sing
like operatic screaming anyway. Allison from Santa Barbara. Good morning to you.
I wanted your 10% cosign. Yeah, thank you. People. Jazz is only for a jazz
bar. I took jazz as my elective. Jazz is very broad, though, Allison. I took
jazz as my elective in college and going to jazz concert in jazz bars was
part of the great. I still couldn't. Yeah, that's right. Calm down. Ella
Fitzgerald. I mean, it's just wow, like a slow, but I really do. I strongly
believe that there is a time and a place to listen to jazz. It doesn't
make any sense. Jazz is like, say real words. Seasonal. I thought more people
would vote seasonal. They know they love. They love their holiday music
here. You know, time and place for that, though. Kenny G in here in the
holidays. What? NPR show. Friend of show. Don't show Kenny. Kenny G. Not
Kenny. What is Stu's least favorite? I would love to know that still. It's not
country. He likes country. He likes. You know, that's a tough one. You know
what? You know what, Jen? I love you. Love you to death. But definitely my
favorite. Oh, skittly bops. Never heard to a lot of jazz. I listen to a lot of
jazz. I'm doing jazz hands right now. Wow. Jazz hands. Okay, let's talk about
a little bit of traffic. This traffic report brought to us by Jacobian Myers
injury lawyers who the 1 10 they could use some jazz down there. Take a look
at that tough ride. Indeed, from the 1 0 5 out to the 10 freeway. Super slow
and go. Yeah, super. That's the best description. I can give it to you. Give
yourself plenty of extra town southbound. Not even much better from
the 10 out to the 1 0 5 through that South Los Angeles. The fast track lanes
on the southbound are the only saving grace northbound. Even those are
starting to back up. So keep all that in mind. If that's your ride, it will
listen to some hot spots right now. I've been hit by a semi truck on the
freeway, and I was going 60 miles an hour when I knew I had an injury. I was
nervous about dealing with the insurance company without the resources
of Jacobian Myers. I wouldn't be to the place I am today. Thank you, Jacobian
Myers. Welcome back. It is September 1st in September is National Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month, and studies show the disease is the second most
common type of cancer diagnosed in men. More staggering statistics. It's second
only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among men. Lots
of men hate going to the doctor, let alone getting that prostate exam or
taking other preventative measures. But these steps could mean the difference
between catching something early or being diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Here to help guide us through this process is Dr Kirk Tamandong,
urologist and area of medical director and chief of staff at Kaiser
Permanente West Los Angeles. Thanks for joining us this morning. Good morning.
Thank you. So when we say common, how common are we talking here? It's
actually the second most common cancer in men in America after colon cancer
and after lung cancer. I apologize. And in when it comes to cancer deaths,
unfortunately, it is actually the leading cause of cancer deaths in men
in America. Why is that? The numbers are staggering. Over 300,000 men are
diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the U. S. Most men don't die of
especially because of early screening. Now, most men don't die of it, but it
is actually very common. So because it's common, we we do recommend early
screening. But it can be a serious diagnosis, though, if you're if if you
are diagnosed. Absolutely. If especially when diagnosed late, early detection is
key here with most cancers. I heard you earlier talk about lymphoma and
leukemia with prostate cancer as well. Early diagnosis is key. When men are
diagnosed late, unfortunately, the treatment options are limited, and that
can cause to some more complications or potentially death. It's interesting
because we talk about the exam. Um, and, uh, you know, men get nervous about
that prostate exam. But now that I go to my doctor every year like they don't
even really do that anymore. There's there's other types of tests, right?
That that men can get to screen for prostate cancer. I'm glad you asked
that. Actually, prostate specific antigen is a blood test that can detect
early prostate cancer. Ah, prostate examination is something that I
recommend as a urologist for men with family history. However, however, not
wanting to get an exam should not be a reason not to get screened. A PSA
process. Specific antigen blood testing is an easy test. Also screen for it. The
key thing is not letting the exam scare men away from getting screened for
prostate cancer, right? Because think of the alternative, right? What are some
of the early warning signs of prostate cancer? Excellent question. Prostate
cancer, unlike lymphoma we were talking about earlier, is a silent disease.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have signs or symptoms. By the time men detect, you
know, signs or symptoms, weight loss or pain in the bones and whatnot,
unfortunately has traveled metastasized to other organs. That's why we
recommend early detection here. Kaiser Permanente recommend all men starting
age 50 get a annual prostate specific antigen PSA test. And what if you have a
family history? Is it the same age? It's actually a family history increases the
risks of prostate cancer. If your brother had, if a man's brother had
prostate cancer, they have three times likelihood of developing prostate cancer
in their lifetime. If a father had prostate cancer, their sons have twice
the risks of developing prostate cancer. Black men, black ancestry also has about
a 1.6 times increased chances of developing prostate cancer. So we
recommend black men and men with family history, especially brother or father
with prostate cancer, to start getting screening tests at age 45 actually. Okay.
Well, that really like brought some alarm bells to me. My twin brother
actually had it and he dealt with the prostate cancer too. And it was treated,
was treated for it. So that's like with, I'm acutely aware of it and every year I
test over and over again. But tell us about the treatment options now for men,
especially if you're, if detected early, there are, there are many options out
there. When it's diagnosed early treatment, the options are actually very
good. The two main stays of treatment in younger men are a surgery, a robotic
assisted radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy in frail elderly men.
We actually many times recommend active surveillance or watchful waiting. So not
all men need treatment, uh, depending on risk benefits of the treatment that
should be really discussed with a urologist, with, with a patient's doctor.
However, today treatment options are good enough that majority of men like
your twin brother are cured actually when it's diagnosed early. And that's
the important thing about September. It creates stories like yours to come out
like your twin brother's story to come out and hopefully cause other men to
think about getting early screening testing done. What are the side effects
of common treatments for prostate cancer like surgery or radiation? Good
question. Again, I want to reiterate when diagnosed early, uh, when treatment
options are more like such as radiation or treatment, the chances of side
effects are also lower, especially in young, younger men. They do much better
here at Kaiser Permanente. For instance, we're able to do surgery on men and
send them home same day. Majority of patients come in, get an operation, are
able to go home same day and return to work usually within a few weeks. The
most common side effects that most men worry about are urinary incontinence,
urinary control and sexual dysfunction. Both of those can be temporary in most
men are and most men are able to recover from it again, especially when it's
diagnosed early. When cancer is diagnosed later, prostate cancer, that's
when the surgery needs to be more comprehensive and other treatments like
radiation therapy, other things can cause two more side effects. So final
word here, doctor, really it's we say this all the time, but early detection
is key, right? Get tested. Absolutely. And that's why I hope your brother's
doing very well. He's doing well, he's doing well and I'll get tested. Thank
you so much. We appreciate it. Thank you. All right, over to you, Maria. All
right, let's talk about our weather coming up because things are going to
change as we get to the upcoming weekend. Good daily weather is brought
to you by my home sold a live look outside. That was the pier in Santa
Monica. Different view, a little overcast because of some of that patchy
cloud cover in that marine layer and we love it that our natural A. C. Has
come back and that's mainly because the heat waves done the area of high
pressure that was in control of our weather has now pushed well off to our
east over the country's midsection and look at how hot it's going to be today
and 101 in Oklahoma City. If you're headed to Dallas 100 100 as well in ST
Louis, kind of watching this area here in the gulf near Houston and New
Orleans because we do have the fifth named storm in the Atlantic and
including the gulf. Uh yeah, just on the letter E has not been very active in
the Atlantic and that typically happens when we have an El Nino, the reverse
effect more active in the pacific. But looking at Edward packing winds of 50
miles an hour, bringing rain through parts of Houston and you can see all
the way into parts of New Orleans. That storm system will make landfall and
will continue to weaken as it moves inland. But it is bringing quite a bit
of rain and winds are 50 miles an hour. Conversely, on the east side or east
pacific side, looking at three current storms were on the 13th named storm.
Now here is tropical storm marie that is going to skirt. It looks like
according to this model, the peninsula and then move farther away. At least
that's what this model, this is the european model is showing us one
outlier does show it kind of moving closer to SoCal. At this point, it's
still pretty far away. We're going to give it a couple more days until these
models really come together. But for the most part, the majority of the
models showing it moving away from Mexico as well as SoCal. In the
meantime though, I don't, I do want you to be prepared for the chance at this
point, 30 to 40% chance for showers this upcoming weekend, but also some
increasing surf as well as high tides coming in. So coastal communities,
watch out right now. We have some very fun sized waves. If you are an
experienced surfer 2 to 4 ft all the way down from Ventura to San Diego,
occasionally five ft sets for Orange County. Those temperatures on the sand
mid seventies. So really comfortable over the next several days. What a
welcome change from the heat wave we saw for the better part of august. So
now we start september very nicely 82 for downtown L. A. 81 tomorrow and then
we've got that chance for showers beginning saturday into monday labor
day holiday 89 for the valleys and the Inland Empire. Lots of sunshine
through friday as well. And then warming up this weekend, a little more
humidity and a chance for that tropical moisture to move up from that
southerly flow. Even a chance for some thunderstorms up in the mountains by
saturday, 40% chance for some showers there through the monday holiday labor
day and the high desert. Lots of sunshine leading up to the weekend
with those temperatures really comfortable in the upper eighties. The
Coachella Valley 101 today, not too bad manageable. And then we'll get down to
the nineties on friday with some clouds and that chance 30 to 40% chance for
some of that moisture coming up from tropical storm marie. We'll keep you
posted. Like I said, as we get closer, those models are gonna come together a
little bit more. In the meantime, let's do some tv shout outs, shall we? Oh,
