Drivers beware. You want to slow down if you want to save some money.
Automated speed cameras will be activated throughout
Los Angeles starting on Monday.
Sandra's here with everything we need to know.
That's right. Definitely slow down behind the wheel
because in all 125 cameras will be in place
at some of the city's most dangerous streets and intersections.
And these automated speed safety cameras,
they're getting switched on starting Monday.
So the system will catch drivers going
at least 11 miles per hour above speed limit.
They'll photograph the rear license plate and record the violations.
There will be a 60-day warning period,
so you'll just receive a warning in the mail,
not a fine yet.
But eventually,
expect to pay $50 if you're going 11 to 15 miles per hour faster than
the speed limit, $100 if you're going 16
to 25 miles per hour above the limit.
And the fines do go up to more than $500
if you're traveling 100 miles per hour above
the speed limit, which is really, really too fast.
But, I mean, they're incremental, right?
They do add up.
And these are civil fines, keep in mind.
They're not criminal, so they're not going to add points
to your license or get reported to your insurance.
But, clearly, an effort to make sure these intersections,
these streets, stay safe.
So, Monday, the first of these cameras will be switched on.
And the entire network is set to be up
and running by the end of this year.
This is, of course, a pilot program that was voted
into and recommended by city council.
It runs through 2032,
and it's meant to see if this automated system will make streets safer.
So we will see.
But a good reminder here,
slow down because you might be caught on camera.
Do we know where the, I guess, the most offensive neighborhood?
They're going to be all over LA.
There's a map online if you definitely want to check it out.
But, yeah, when you consider these busy intersections
and these streets that are unsafe, very crowded areas,
uh yeah you're gonna obviously everyone's watching all
the time right there's cameras everywhere i
honestly i just think there's a camera
at every yeah right exactly yeah i mean speeding's always
an issue obviously but now with like people being distracted
with phones and speeding it just
escalates the danger level all right
when was the last time you guys got a speeding ticket it's
actually been a very very long time knock on i think
the older i get what about you uh speeding
hasn't been for a while
but what's been what's been the problem I recently got well I did get
a ticket for uh yeah my front license plate oh
that's okay that's an easy miss though
