Ukrainian strikes on shipping in the Sea of Azov have created the same export logistics problems for Russia as Iran's strikes on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz did for the Persian Gulf countries, CNN reports .
The publication notes that in recent days, satellite imagery and ship tracking services have recorded large queues of ships near Rostov-on-Don and other approaches to the Sea of Azov. This was caused by the closure of the Don-Azov Canal and the Kerch Strait following a series of Ukrainian strikes. As CNN points out, the Sea of Azov previously remained effectively inaccessible to Ukrainian strikes and served as an important base for Russia for military operations and cargo transportation. However, the development of Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle technology has significantly changed the situation.
The American Institute for the Study of War believes the new campaign is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy. According to analysts, "these strikes are a new phase in Ukraine's efforts to isolate occupied Crimea from the Russian logistics network and disrupt Russian maritime routes, particularly for the transportation of oil products and grain."
Experts warn that the consequences could extend far beyond the military sphere. Andrey Sizov, a leading analyst of Black Sea agricultural markets, explained that the Black Sea's role in global grain trade is critical.
"The Black Sea is for the wheat market what the Persian Gulf is for the crude oil market," he emphasized.
According to the expert, if the current situation continues, "Russia's economic losses could grow to billions of dollars."
According to CNN, approximately a quarter of Russia's wheat exports transit the Sea of Azov. Although Moscow claims it can reroute shipments through other Black Sea ports, analysts doubt this will be sufficient during the peak grain export season.
As the publication concludes, the current campaign is a continuation of Ukraine's strategy of isolating occupied Crimea. Following attacks on the peninsula's energy infrastructure, Ukraine has intensified attacks on bridges, railways, highways, and ships supporting Russian logistics, gradually hindering the use of the Sea of Azov as one of Russia's main transport corridors.
The Sea of Azov is a vital waterway that connects Russia with eastern Europe. It is of crucial economic and military importance to Moscow, which uses it to ship oil, grain and other products such as steel to international markets.
Russia suspended shipping through the Don-Azov canal, Reuters reported. The canal connects with a Russian river network and the Caspian Sea. This export route via Kerch and the Bosphorus strait in Turkey is effectively shut down.
Ukraine’s former defence minister, Andriy Zagorodnyuk, said the Kremlin had lost control of a “critical” maritime corridor. He said the blockade affected military vessels and shipping transporting grain stolen from occupied southern Ukraine and moved through the ports of Berdyansk and Mariupol.
“The Caspian Sea doesn’t have any connection to the world’s oceans. It has turned into a lake. All of its products – agricultural, fertiliser, whatever – go through this channel and river,” Zagorodnyuk said.
