Ukrainian forces have begun a new phase of their campaign to isolate occupied Crimea, striking Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Kyiv claims the goal of the operation is to disrupt the occupiers' logistics and impede the supply of fuel and military supplies to the peninsula, according to The New York Times.

Following attacks on roads, railways, fuel depots, and energy infrastructure, Ukraine has turned to maritime supply routes. Long-range drones are being used for this purpose, which have recently enabled operations even in the Sea of Azov.

According to the Ukrainian military, the strikes are aimed at "systematically disrupting the enemy's logistics chain." The General Staff claims that dozens of Russian vessels, including tankers, cargo ships, and support boats, have been attacked in recent days. At the same time, the newspaper notes that it was unable to independently confirm Ukraine's claim of hitting or destroying 116 Russian vessels over nine days. The publication confirmed strikes on at least 11 ships, but speculates that the actual number may be significantly higher.

Thomas Alexa, an analyst at the maritime consulting firm Ambrey, analyzed Ukrainian military videos and stated that approximately 30–35 Russian vessels were attacked over the course of just a few days last week, primarily in the Sea of Azov. The 414th Unmanned Systems Brigade explained that the campaign to isolate Crimea was developed in three stages. "First, there were attacks on land routes on and around the peninsula, then strikes on major supply depots. The third phase, focused on sea routes, began last week when it became clear that Russian vessels were unprotected and vulnerable," said Senior Sergeant Fin.

According to him, Ukrainian operators have to fly drones approximately 400 kilometers, overcoming Russian air defenses and electronic warfare systems. Over the sea, the drones fly as low as possible to avoid radar detection. Following Ukrainian attacks on oil depots and transport infrastructure, Russia has begun to increasingly use sea routes to supply Crimea.

Elizabeth Brough, a research fellow at the Atlantic Council, believes that most of the ships in the Sea of Azov were not carrying oil for export, but rather cargo to supply the occupied peninsula.

According to the Ukrainian side, the strikes are also aimed at weakening the Russian oil sector, which brings significant income to the Kremlin.

Moscow officials claim the campaign will not affect its plans to continue the war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called Ukraine's attacks on ships "worse than piracy."

At the same time, Russian pro-war bloggers sharply criticized the country's military leadership for its failure to protect maritime communications with Crimea.

"If things continue like this, we'll have our own Strait of Hormuz... Our ships simply won't be able to reach Crimea and return without drones," wrote Russian military blogger "Military Informant" on Telegram.

As reported, on the night of July 15, the Defense Forces struck tankers belonging to Russia's shadow fleet in the Black Sea for the first time, hitting 20 vessels . Furthermore, on the night of July 14, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Security Forces struck 11 more Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov, part of the so-called shadow fleet of the aggressor country.

In this way, the SBS paralyzes the enemy's feeder fleet , which is a crucial component of the shadow fleet. This makes it impossible to export petroleum products from Russian oil transshipment ports and loading stations via the Volga-Don Canal and the Sea of Azov to larger tankers.
