Ukrainian drones successfully flew 2,400 kilometers of Russian territory in over 12 hours, striking the Omsk oil refinery in Siberia . According to The Telegraph, this is the longest-range strike by the Ukrainian army to date – the equivalent of flying across the UK three times.
This demonstrated to Moscow that targets once considered secure due to their distance from the front line were now under attack. And there was no immediate solution to this problem.
"Ukraine can now threaten oil refineries and infrastructure across Siberia, as well as military bases and Russia's largest liquefied natural gas terminal. As a result, Vladimir Putin is forced to find ways to conceal hundreds of new targets, increasing pressure on limited air defense stockpiles and slow-moving supply chains," the publication writes. The Omsk Oil Refinery, however, did not have its own air defense system, the publication notes. Russia is too large to provide anti-aircraft missiles or gun crews to protect every critical national infrastructure facility. Its available assets are concentrated around major cities and the front lines.
"This is a pretty telling example of Russia's current air defense system. They seem to be focusing heavily on Moscow and possibly St. Petersburg. But if these Ukrainian drones can get past the first barrier, there's practically nothing that can stop them beyond that," expert Kyle Glen told The Telegraph.
Moreover, Moscow's air defense system was designed to defend against NATO fighters and ballistic missiles, not against slow-moving swarms of drones that fly low and have a different radar signature. According to Fire Point, the FP-1 drones have a maximum range of 2,100 miles. The company produces about 200 drones per day at a cost of approximately $50,000 each. However, there's little stopping Fire Point from increasing the drone's range to 4,000 kilometers or more, missile expert Fabian Hoffmann told The Telegraph.
Among the goals that are now or will soon be achievable are Russia's largest liquefied natural gas plant on the Arctic Yamal Peninsula, as well as pumping stations to transport increasingly scarce oil reserves across the country.
Last month, Putin promised to build more air defense systems to counter Ukrainian bombings. This week, he called on officials to build small oil refineries.
"That's good for the long-term goal. But it doesn't solve your immediate problem. Furthermore, building more air defense systems requires more money, more components, more industrial capacity—and every S-500 battery you build is one more thing you're not building at the front," said Thomas Whittington, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv's long-range strike campaign has reached every major Russian oil refinery, highlighting what he described as a series of successful attacks on infrastructure supporting Russia's military operations. According to Zelenskyy, the strikes targeted oil infrastructure, military facilities, and other strategic sites across multiple Russian regions, including western Russia and Siberia, as part of Ukraine's ongoing campaign to disrupt assets linked to Moscow's war effort.
