Every night, Ukrainian soldiers prepare large-scale operations to destroy oil and gas facilities deep in Russia, which requires significantly more complex preparation than the actual launch of drones. Currently, long-range drones are the most powerful tool in the Ukrainian Armed Forces' arsenal, exerting the greatest pressure on Russia . The attacks are carried out in strict secrecy, and soldiers deliberately hand over their smartphones to avoid revealing their positions. In a single night, the drones can fly up to 2,000 kilometers into Russian territory, hitting oil refineries.
This was reported in a report by Paul Ronzheimer, a journalist for the German publication Bild , who visited the Ukrainian UAV unit, the 1st Independent Center for Unmanned Systems. He wrote that the soldiers left Dnipro at midnight for the front, then drove an hour along dirt roads to an abandoned house, from where another vehicle took them to the middle of a field. It was there that the journalist saw FP-1 drones from the Ukrainian manufacturer Firepoint.
"One thing is clear: if Russian intelligence had learned of the soldiers' plans, a direct drone strike would likely have been carried out. But Ukraine is a large country, and the soldiers are making every effort to avoid attracting attention," the Bild article states.
A fighter with the call sign "Phoenix" explained to a journalist how the devices operate.
"It's essentially a regular aircraft. Like a civilian aircraft, it has an engine and navigation systems that guide it to its target... They're not controlled remotely. They carry out a pre-programmed mission," said a fighter with the call sign "Phoenix."
The journalist described the moment of launch: the fighters arm the drones with explosives, prepare them for takeoff, and retreat a few meters. Then, in a matter of minutes, the drones, one after another, disappear into the starry sky, heading toward Russia. Ronzheimer noted that he was surprised the Russians hadn't spotted the devices with their reconnaissance drones. The unit commander told the journalist that the FP-1s are not classic drones, like the small FPV models used on the front lines. He said they are large aircraft with a large payload, and the underlying technology is significantly more sophisticated.
"Because the law is on our side. Because we defend our country and our freedom. We have no choice but to be the best," the unit commander explained, answering the question of why Ukraine is now ahead of Russia in the drone war.
According to the commander, the most difficult part of the job isn't the drone launch itself, but the planning and preparation of the operation, as the fighters could become targets for Russian attacks at any moment. The morning after the mission described by the journalist, Russian state media reported new drone attacks on oil refineries.
