Police in Saint Augustine Florida say a man running from ICE agents has been
struck and killed by a tractor trailer. That's the third death in just a week.
ICE agents have routinely carried out vehicle stops as part of the agency's
regular immigration enforcement operations but
recent deadly incidents have cast a shadow on the maneuver.
A new policy shift aims to change the department's tactics
perspective immediately. Fox's Alexis McAdam explains.
There are sufficient critical questions to justify bringing non-emergency
traffic stops to a halt. Sources tell Fox ICE has ordered officers to temporarily
pause most vehicle stops during immigration
enforcement operations except for the most serious criminal targets.
I think that's a positive step and I think Mark Wayne has been really smart
to say let the cops do their job they need to be safe.
Sources say the break will be used to give agents additional training.
They aren't trained in many of the tactics that they are being asked
to conduct. This comes after two fatal ICE involved shootings
in less than a week. One in Texas and one in Maine.
Some Democrats and Republicans agree DHS does need to make changes but not
everyone is convinced the change will get to the root cause. There's no
doubt that ICE needs to improve its performance
but those who are calling for ICE to be abolished altogether are ignoring
absolutely vital safety work that ICE does. I'm also concerned that many of the
changes that they're talking about are probably temporary and
just for a month. These aren't substantive
changes and this isn't real accountability.
Now sources say agents will still use these stops to go after the most serious
offenders out in the streets and no enforcement numbers will drop
temporarily while agents undergo additional training. Reporting in New
York, I'm Alexis McAdams, Fox News.
