A small local bakery is quickly becoming a destination for cookie lovers, and it's hidden
inside a long-time gyro restaurant in Brooklyn's Kensington neighborhood.
On this road trip close to home, News 12's Shakti Dennis takes us inside Pookie Bakery.
You've probably heard of speakeasies, but what about a speakeasy bakery?
Tucked inside a long-time gyro spot on Coney Island Avenue, you'll find one of Brooklyn's
25-year-old Moheed Ali is the baker behind Pookie Bakery, making gooey cookies and homemade
soft-serve.
We're always baking.
We also produce our dough every day, so we're making about, I think, 1,500 to 2,000 cookies
per day.
It all started with Ali trying to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie for family and
friends.
Eventually, he put a few out for sale at the gyro restaurant his father and brother
have run for nearly two decades.
We have like a few cookies right here.
They'll sell out.
We'll bring more.
They'll sell out.
We'll bring more.
They'll sell out.
We just kept investing and got a bigger oven, bigger machinery and everything, and it still
sells out.
And before long, Pookie Bakery was born.
The name Pookie comes from me calling my niece Pookie.
And while the bakery is taking off, Ali hasn't quit his day job.
He starts baking first thing, then works a full-time 9-to-5, and then comes back, often
staying way past one in the morning.
And then we'll leave that in for about 15 minutes or so.
Videos of these cookie tins have racked up millions of views online.
It's just surreal.
It's a great thing.
It's a blessing from God.
Now, locals and tourists are lining up just to get a taste.
People always tell me, they're like, you have to come to the city.
And then I'm telling them, I'm like, the city's coming to us, basically, you know what I'm
saying, which is great, which is awesome.
And it's great for this neighborhood.
Kensington is where I grew up, so this is like down the block from my home.
So before our customers, they'll buy the cookies.
Now, his cookie customers are buying our gyros.
So delicious.
Oh my God.
It's soft on the inside, and then like crispy, crunchy on the outside.
With ice cream, 10 out of 10.
In Kensington, Shakti Dennis, he's 12.
