A mother says after more than two decades,
she is still fighting for justice for her son,
who was a teenager when he was shot
and killed by a police officer in 2003.
Tonight, on what would have been his 43rd birthday,
family and friends are demanding answers and a second look at the case.
News 12's Mike Lamorte explains.
They're walking for a son, a brother,
a young man who never got to see his 20th birthday.
Instead, Carlos Lopez's family is marking
his 43rd birthday without him,
more than two decades after he was shot and killed by an NYPD officer.
I can't hug him. I can't kiss him. I can't say happy birthday.
Why? Because NYPD killed my child,
and they keep on prolonging the case, prolonging the case.
I have all the proof.
Carolina Lopez is demanding the Brooklyn District
Attorney's Office take a second look at her son's case.
Lopez was 19 when he died on May 1, 2003.
Investigators believe he opened fire
and killed another man, James Hodge,
but his family has never accepted that account.
In a newly notarized letter, the sister of James Hodge wrote
her brother had no connection to Carlos Lopez,
adding the people she spoke with said the actual shooter fled the scene
and has never been apprehended.
They know Carlos didn't kill nobody.
A 19-year-old young boy died for something that he didn't do.
Ms. Lopez says the evidence also includes this black sweatshirt,
which she believes was planted on her son.
A sweatshirt with no bullet holes, unlike the rest of his clothing.
And hoodies are 3X. My son was a large or extra large.
That was a cap and gown on my son.
News 12 reached out
to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office for an update
and to ask whether there are any plans to reopen the investigation.
We're waiting to hear back. In East New York, Mike LaMorte, News 12.
