Thousands of people, they came together at Jones Beach this morning,
walking to support a cause that was close to their hearts.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention held
its annual Out of the Darkness Walk, it's called.
The event brings families and friends together to help prevent suicide
and to remember loved ones that they have lost.
One of those taking part was Dennis Duca of Bethpage.
He and his wife have been taking part in this walk for two decades,
honoring the memory of their daughter, Sherilyn.
In our 16th year, I turned to my wife and said,
I don't know if I could do this anymore.
She was 16, and we've been doing this as long as she was alive.
But we persevered, and we said, no, we need to continue doing it.
And we're both very involved in the chapter as volunteers.
It's great to see so much support there, too.
As of this afternoon, the walk has raised more than $685,000,
getting closer to its goal of $750,000.
The money will help support research, education,
and programs that work to prevent suicide.
