Ukraine's strikes against Russian satellite communications systems appear aimed at systematically weakening the Russian Armed Forces' ability to obtain satellite imagery and maintain communications. This will have a significant impact on the combat capabilities of Russian troops. OSINT expert Chris O'Wiki writes about this in his blog .
To date, Ukraine has attacked space communications centers in the Moscow and Vladimir regions three times. The center in Dubna was hit twice, on June 22 and 30. On June 24, the center in Vladimir was struck. In Vladimir, the complex's main 25-meter parabolic antenna was damaged, as was the antenna on the roof of the Main Hardware and Software Complex. The central part of the latter, as well as Hardware and Technical Building No. 1, also sustained significant damage. These buildings house satellite modems and multiplexers, a central switching node connected to fiber-optic communication lines with other space centers, and transmitting and receiving systems, the central cable route for switching the satellite's antennas, and cooling equipment for the transmitters and main antenna electronics. Three more complexes have not yet been attacked: the center in Medved'ye Ozery in Moscow region, as well as complexes in Zheleznogorsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai and Khabarovsk. These facilities represent a more difficult target for Ukrainian strikes, as they are located significantly further from the border. Hitting them will likely require long-range drones, and in greater numbers. Military analysts believe these attacks will seriously impede secure satellite communications for the Russian government and military, and will also disrupt Russian military access to the global internet via satellites. Z-war correspondents acknowledge the strategic importance of the strikes. A Z-channel post, "Brothers in Arms," was revealing. "Just imagine the scale of the horror. While we're here on the front lines, chipping in for Chinese radios and trying to somehow establish communication between neighboring units, the Ukrainians are calmly launching their drones hundreds of kilometers into our territory. And they're not hitting random targets, but a strategic space communications hub right in the Moscow region. Where is our legendary, 'unparalleled' multi-layered air defense system? Where is the impenetrable shield over strategic facilities that we've been sweetly told about on TV all these years? Obviously, all of this was just a pretty slide for presentations on Frunzenskaya, the headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Defense in Moscow. The enemy is methodically and professionally blinding and deafening us at the state level. And in official reports, they'll once again feed us the usual lie that 'the air defense system worked as planned, but the grass was damaged by fallen debris.' Are we going to continue to pretend that everything is going strictly according to plan?" — he wrote.
