Crimea's geographic location makes it an invaluable military asset, but also a vulnerable target. In recent weeks, Ukraine has stepped up attacks , attempting to cut the peninsula's vital supply lines, turning it into a "giant logistical mousetrap," according to The New York Times.
According to an analysis of satellite imagery and verified video footage, attacks last month targeted bridges and roads. Ukrainian forces also struck air defense systems and radar stations across the peninsula and targeted the power grid and fuel supplies, causing power outages and depriving Russian troops of resources.
Analysts note that this has forced some Russian forces on the southern front to switch to defensive operations. In the early years of the war, attempts to strike Crimea were limited by the weapons available at the time. However, the Ukrainians now claim they can inflict damage potentially sufficient to bring Moscow back to the negotiating table, the NYT reports.
"There's nowhere to hide in Crimea. The Ukrainians are capable of striking any place where there's an anti-aircraft gun, a logistics center, an airfield, or a headquarters," said Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, the retired commander of the U.S. Army in Europe.
In June alone, Ukraine announced strikes on 31 air defense systems and radars.
The attacks exposed significant vulnerabilities in Russia's defense system, which was originally designed for traditional missiles and aircraft, not a fleet of drones.
With its air defenses weakened, Ukraine has shifted to attacks on supply lines. Following strikes on ships and the disruption of ferry service, Russia is now entirely dependent on narrow land and bridge corridors. Ukrainian forces are attempting to close them.
Meanwhile, attacks on bridges have become a cat-and-mouse game: Russia is rushing to repair the damage, while Ukraine is launching new attacks, the publication notes.
Kateryna Stepanenko, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, said Russian forces are increasingly trying to counter Ukrainian drone strikes by patrolling important southern routes with drones and interceptors.
"But they need more mobile air defense to mitigate the impact of Ukrainian strikes," she said. Ukrainian commanders expect Russian troops to adapt, but said they will change their tactics in turn.
"Adaptation may take days, weeks, or months, but we are constantly finding new ways to strike in any direction, at any depth, using any resources available to us," said Artem Belenkov, chief of staff of Ukraine's 412th Unmanned Systems Brigade.
At the same time, while the attacks have forced Russian troops into defensive positions in some areas, military analysts warn that it could take weeks or months for Russia's fighting capability to be reduced to the point where it might be forced to retreat from its positions in southern Ukraine.
However, Crimea's weakened energy system "has exposed the peninsula's systemic vulnerability," said energy analyst Gennady Ryabtsev.
According to him, the Ukrainian attacks have had a cumulative effect, threatening to turn the peninsula into a "giant logistical mousetrap."
