A Striped Red Brick House on a Thai Beach
Welcome to Somjai House, a coastal retreat on Koh Pha Ngan, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. This house, designed to serve as both a retirement residence and a reception for the Coco-NutNume Resort, encapsulates the essence of the island and offers a unique experience.
The main structure of the house consists of a master suite, guest rooms, and a well-equipped kitchen. Additionally, the expansive concrete central patio, open on two sides, provides breathtaking views of the sea and the nearby hills.
The architecture of the house is a representation of harmony with the local environment. The striped red bricks, combined with polished concrete, not only provide a stunning visual but also help maintain a pleasant indoor temperature, which is essential in a hot climate.
The choice of red as the predominant color makes the house stand out amidst the lush green of the coconut plantation and the blue of the sea. The facades facing the sea are adorned with glass that opens onto a spacious terrace, perfect for enjoying the views and shielding from the tropical sun.
The horizon line of the hills behind the house inspired the architectural design, allowing the wind to flow smoothly through the structure, keeping the interior fresh and airy. The house also features balconies that provide protection from the intense heat.
The unique iron staircase, built by skilled local workers, leads to a rooftop terrace, offering stunning views of the sea and the neighboring island of Ko Samui. The staircase steps reflect the diagonal red stripe pattern of the facades, creating a striking visual effect.
Furthermore, the house incorporates local elements and materials, such as coconut wood used to shape the walls, leaving a coconut tree pattern on the surfaces. The connection to the local culture and the craftsmanship of the artisans is evident throughout the construction.
