Never yell or scold the dog during training. You want it to be a positive fun time! Training your dog to sit is one of the first things you should work on teaching them. If you can teach your dog to sit, then you can go to the next things they need to learn. Teaching your dog comments is a great way to bond with your dog!

Alright!
Today, we are going to show you how to teach your puppy or adult dog to sit.
Come over here Memphis!
Will you stay in my shot? Thank you!
Umm... I've already been working with Memphis on how to sit and a few other commands.
So, she does know...
It's gonna look like it was a little bit easier for me to teach her, because I've already been starting to work with her.
The biggest thing when training your puppies to sit or lay down or anything you're going to train them,
is to remember to be patient, be kind and reward often!
Yay!
Umm... This is how I teach my dogs to sit.
There are many different ways to do this.
You can use treats for rewards.
You can use a toy for rewards.
You can use a clicker trainer for rewards.
This is just how I choose to teach my dogs to sit.
It works for me.
So, here we go!
The first thing you're going to need is a puppy.
Puppy!
Can we have you over here?
Memphis?
Memphis, could you come over here please?
Thank you Memphis!
The second thing you're going to need, if you're choosing to do reward by treats, is treats.
Having small little treats is the best way to do this, because you're going to need a few of them.
You can also, like I said, use a clicker or many other methods.
See, I didn't even have to tell her what to do.
Or many other methods.
The way to teach a dog to sit, is you want to take the treat...
We have to demonstrate how to do it. I know you know how to do it.
Umm...
Here! Ready?
Come here!
Alright, we'll follow around.
You want to take the treat, tell the puppy to sit and lean their head back.
Sit!
See how she leaned her head back?
Here, I'll give it to you, because you did it.
Oh! You dropped it!
Umm...
You want to get them to lean their head back, because as they lean their head back,
they're instinctively going to want to make their butt touch the ground.
Sit!
Memphis, sit!
See, she doesn't know how to do it completely yet.
Memphis, sit!
Look!
Here!
Memphis, sit!
Up! Up! Up!
I know you're excited!
Sit!
Good girl!
You can use words like, yes.
Some people say, yes, whenever their dog does what they want them to do.
Some people say, good girl. Some people say, good boy.
I always say, good girl, because I want her to know I'm excited.
Come here!
Ready?
Sit!
Good job!
Good girl!
Umm...
When you practice sit, you really want to do it for maybe ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
Umm...
You don't want to overstimulate your dog.
You don't want them to get bored with what you're doing.
Yes, I have treats in that hand too.
Here! Look!
Look! Right here!
Right here!
Memphis, sit!
Good girl!
So again, you want to take...
You can't just sit before we're ready to do it!
That's like cheating!
Sometimes to reset your dog, when you're trying to work with them,
and trying to teach them things...
Umm...
I know!
One way to get them to reset, is to just toss a treat away.
That way, they'll kind of walk away and come back.
Go ahead!
Sit!
There you go!
If you notice, like I said, as you kind of tip...
See how her head goes up?
I'm trying to look at the screen to make sure she's actually doing it.
Her head will go up!
That's what you want to happen.
As her head goes up...
Memphis, sit!
Look!
Memphis, sit!
There you go!
It will kind of just force them back into that sit position.
That's what you want them to do.
Eventually, as you're training them...
Like I said, I have been working with Memphis.
You don't want to reward with a treat every single time.
Because you don't want them to constantly be looking for that treat.
You want them to think,
Well, if I do it, I might get a treat.
But I might not.
Memphis, sit!
Good girl!
Good job!
You can praise with pets.
What are you doing?
Are you going to bite me?
You can praise with pets.
You can praise with treats.
Memphis, sit!
Sit!
Good job!
Are you a good girl?
I know you're a good girl!
Um...
You are a good girl!
Once your dog has figured out how to sit properly...
The next thing you're going to want to start training them is lay down.
Which...
Is very easy to do from a sitting position.
Memphis, sit!
Sit!
Good girl!
Now, from the sit position...
You basically want to bring it into a lay down position.
Now again, I've been working with her a little bit.
So, she kind of already knows how to do this.
She's not completely learned lay down yet.
But, she's getting better at it.
So again, I'm going to show that again.
Come here!
Memphis!
Look right here!
Focus!
Memphis, sit!
Another good tip is to always work with them on training when they're tired.
Because when they're not tired, they kind of act like this.
Memphis just ate dinner and she's not really that tired.
Come here!
Memphis, sit!
Sit!
Good girl!
Lay down!
Good girl!
Good job!
Good job Memphis!
Rawr!
I know I shouldn't do that.
I shouldn't let you bite my hand.
That's a play bite.
She's not biting hard.
Some of you have asked too, while we're doing some tips on training.
Some of you have asked, what do you do when your dog bites your hand?
How do you get them to stop?
You know...
If I...
She's already pretty much learned how not to do it.
Basically, what I'll do...
I'll see if I can tease her to do it.
Did you see that?
I made a high pitch ouch.
And she immediately stops.
She stops from biting and she'll just start licking.
She'll kind of just like...
Oh! Maybe I'll just lick your hand.
That's how I trained her not to bite my hand.
That's all I did.
That's all I've ever done with any of my dogs.
Is just do a real loud high pitch ouch.
Because...
It's what they do, when they're being bitten.
So...
That's kind of...
It's hard for you guys to see, but she does stop every time I do it.
But I'm teasing her, because I have treats in my hand.
I shouldn't be doing that.
But I had to demonstrate.
We had to demonstrate!
One more time!
Come here!
Memphis!
Sit!
Now lay down!
Good girl!
You are such a good girl!
So again...
You're gonna need a puppy or an adult dog.
You can use the same techniques on an adult dog.
It does not have to be a puppy.
An adult dog can learn all these same tricks.
Using the same methods that we're using.
That we're showing here.
Hey!
Don't bite my hand!
You can lick my hand!
I don't mind!
Don't bite my hand!
Anyway!
That's our short little video.
Showing how we have trained Memphis how to sit and lay down.
See?
I planned on just doing one.
But we're gonna do both!
What you think?
So, what you think we should teach her next?
What trick should we try to teach Memphis next?
Maybe we'll teach her how to do it.
Then do a video and show you how we taught her how to do it!
Yay!
She wants to play!
Look how dark she's getting, guys!
Look!
Here, turn around!
Show them!
Show them how dark you're getting!
I know!
Look how dark you're getting!
Can you say,
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks for commenting!
And we'll see you on Wednesday!
Goodbye!
I love you!
Turn around you old mother!
You old little snow dog!
