My Husky Has Liver Cancer, But Memphis is A Champion!

My Dog has been diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Yes, our sweet old dog, Memphis has cancer. All hope is not lost, and today we will talk a lot about what all of this means.
A couple of weeks ago, Memphis went in for her routine blood work and her liver levels were off the charts. They've been slowly climbing over the past three years, but this time her ALKP, ALT, and GTT numbers were ridiculously high. Because of that, we scheduled an ultrasound, x-rays, and clotting blood work. Our amazing veterinarian, Dr. Ryan, found a tumor on her liver. Luckily, Memphis was such a good girl that he was able to do a needle biopsy right then and there. The results came back quicker than expected, bringing us a mix of bad news and good news.
The bad news is she has cancer, specifically Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common primary liver tumor in dogs. The good news? This specific type of tumor is very slow-growing, rarely spreads, and has a surprisingly good prognosis! It looks like it's completely operable. If the surgeon can get clean margins, she won't even need chemo or radiation, and most dogs go on to live totally normal lives. We have been referred to the amazing specialists at the Animal Surgical Center in Flint, Michigan. The same wonderful place that helped Shelby back in 2019. Her surgery is tentatively scheduled for July 1st. Please remember that age is not a disease. Memphis is a happy, active dog who just hiked a mile and a half with us on our recent camping trip. We are staying positive, manifesting the best outcome, and sending all the good out into the universe. Life is short, make memories with your dogs!
