It is freezing outside! We are currently stuck in a massive snowstorm, so we decided to get up early and make the ultimate comfort food. Today on Snow Dogs Cooking, we are making a hearty Slow Cooker Northern Bean and Ham Soup. I realized I have never actually made this myself (even though we sold it at the deli years ago!), so I called my mom for the recipe, grabbed a leftover ham bone from the freezer, and fired up the crockpot. This is a "fix it and forget it" meal that warms you up from the inside out. Plus, find out which vegetable Memphis absolutely refused to eat... until I added a secret ingredient!

Ingredients
Ham bone (or ham hock)
Cubed ham (leftover or steak)
1 Small onion
1 Cup carrots
1/2 Cup Celery (or 1 cup if you really like celery)
3-6 Cloves minced garlic
1/2 Teaspoon dried thyme
Black pepper to taste
1 Bag dry Great Northern Beans (soaked overnight)
4 Cups of chicken Broth Plus 2 Cups Water(if using the bone or hock), 6 Cups if not.
I found that the broth with the bone can make it a tad bit salty, so when I made it again, I used the bone, but cut the broth to 4 cups plus 2 cups water and that made it perfect! Again, play with this until you get it to your perfect taste!

Tips and Tricks
💡 Soak your beans overnight! This cuts the slow cooker time down to 6-7 hours. If you don't soak them, you'll need to cook them for 9-10 hours.
🔥 Want a thicker, creamier soup? Use a potato masher at the very end to smash some of the soft beans right in the pot. It thickens the broth beautifully without adding cream.
🍖 The Bone Matters! Using a leftover ham bone (especially from a honey-glazed ham) adds a richness and slight sweetness you can't get from just broth. If you don't have one, a smoked ham hock from the store works great.
🌶️ Spice it up! Jamie loves adding hot sauce like Cholula or Red Hot to his bowl. The vinegar and heat cut through the rich ham flavor perfectly.
🥕 Use a salad shooter or grater to shred your carrots if you want them to cook down and almost melt into the soup.

The Kitchen Helpers
The girls were very confused about why we were in the kitchen at 10 AM, but they were happy to help!
❄️ The "Second and Third Best Kitchen Helpers" spent most of the video supervising the snowstorm from the living room window.
🥕 Memphis and the Ice Princess absolutely loved the "Carrot Noodles" (shredded carrots).
🥜 The Celery Incident: Memphis totally refused the plain diced celery! I had to pay a special "Peanut Butter Tax" on the celery to get her to eat it.
🥓 Everyone was excited for the leftover ham scraps that fell off the bone!
