The four-movement Sonata in C major for flute and basso continuo (BWV 1033) is one of Bach's earliest surviving instrumental works. Although it is attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach in the manuscript, which is in the hand of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and has been dated to around 1731, scholars question this attribution, citing the absence of a signature belonging to Johann Sebastian Bach and of a thorough-bass part or continuo line as reasons.
