Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy came from the respected and wealthy bourgeois Jewish family Mendelssohn. On his father's side, he was a grandson of the important philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. After training as a banker, his father Abraham became a partner in his older brother Joseph's bank in 1804. His mother Lea, née Salomon, came from a family of factory owners. After their marriage in 1804, Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn moved from Berlin to Hamburg. In 1805, Felix's musically talented sister Fanny (from 1829 Fanny Hensel) was born. Felix (1809) was followed by his siblings Rebecka (1811) (she married the mathematician Dirichlet in 1831) and Paul Mendelssohn (1812).
All of Abraham Mendelssohn's children were educated as Christians and baptised as Protestants in a home baptism by Johann Jakob Stegemann, pastor of the Reformed Congregation of the Berlin Jerusalem and New Church, on 21 March 1816. On this occasion, Felix was given his baptismal names Jakob and Ludwig. In addition, the ‘Christian’ name Bartholdy was added to the family name, which Lea's brother Jakob Salomon, the Prussian envoy in Rome, had adopted at his baptism after the name of the previous owner of a garden belonging to the family. Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn Bartholdy finally converted to Christianity in 1822. Felix was confirmed in 1825 in the Berlin Parochial Church.
