The Canon Sonata in F major, catalogued as BWV 1040, is a short piece composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Scored for oboe, violin, and basso continuo (typically a combination of cello and harpsichord), it is performed adagio in 4/4 time.
It was probably premiered on 23 February 1712 or 1713. As well as being a standalone piece, Bach incorporated it into the soprano aria 'Weil die Herden wollenreich sind' in the 'Hunting Cantata', BWV 208, and into the aria 'Mein gläubiges Herz' in 'Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt', BWV 68. In his book The Faber Pocket Guide to Bach, Nicholas Kenyon dismisses the piece, stating that 'the trio BWV 1040 does not really need a number of its own, as it is the utterly charming trio sonata that emerges as a postlude to cantatas 208 and 68'. Nevertheless, it is often performed as an instrumental piece in its own right.
