House with Membrane Roof is a compact urban residence in Japan designed by Yuko Nagayama & Associates and shohei yoshida + associates as a response to a dense site with limited access to light and views. Instead of relying on conventional windows, the house draws daylight from above through a translucent, double-layer membrane roof that softly diffuses light into an interior atrium. This central void organizes the spatial layout, with brighter communal areas above and more enclosed private spaces below, creating a clear hierarchy of light and privacy. By integrating structure, light control, ventilation, and an indoor green element, the project demonstrates how a small home can achieve spatial richness and a strong connection to natural conditions despite tight urban constraints.
