I'm going to introduce you to some useful expressions that you can use in your daily work
Whether you have meetings write emails or speak German with
colleagues with the expressions from this video you'll be well prepared
Let's go
Delegating is when you assign a task to another person
Delegating a task or something you are responsible for to another person
Imagine I organize a larger project at work
In which various tasks must be completed
Texts must be written graphics must be created costs must be calculated and so on
If I delegate these individual tasks I assign them to my colleagues
For example we could say that I delegate the task of finding a new supplier to Mr Schulte
He has more contacts and knowledge in this area
I assign the task to Mr Schulte and now Mr Schulte will handle this task
This example sentence shows us that delegating is often abou
To delegate a task to someone who can do it better than me
Here are some more example sentences
I delegated the responsibility for planning the team event
to my assistant so I can focus on other important projects
The work is better distributed Or the restaurant manager
delegates the decision about the menu to the head chef
The restaurant manager cannot or does not want to decide what should be on the menu
He gives this decision and this task to the head chef
Before we continue I'd like to briefly introduce the sponsor of today's video
If you are learning German to work in Germany the job interview is surely an important topic for you
And to prepare you for that I recommend italki
I've been learning Swedish English and most recently Spanish with italki and those who have watched my videos for a while know that
You can book language classes with native speakers there private lessons in which you can speak a lot
If you are looking for teachers you can select categories such as job interview meeting or presentation
Important topics for working in Germany
We'll try an interview and then see how many teachers there are for this class
After clicking on "Book " you can select a time and then practice a job interview with your teacher at that time
By the way you only pay for one lesson and don't need to sign a contract
Every teacher sets their own price so there is instruction available for every budget
Also if you want to get job-ready in Germany with italki click the link in the video description
If you book your first lesson for 10 euros using the code Rieke5 you will get a 5 euro discount until May 1st
Good luck
To solemnly endorse something is a synonym for officially approving it but it is not quite as formal
If my supervisor approves something he allows me to do something or implement something I have planned
I could say that I'm still waiting for my boss to approve my concept
I have therefore created a concept a plan for a larger project and given this concept to my boss
Now I'm waiting for the boss to say yes the concept looks good you may implement it like that
The report still needs to be approved by the personnel department before it can be published
We have written a report and want to publish it
But before we can do that our HR department has to approve the text and say yes the text is good it can be published like this
When a colleague is sick someone else usually has to take over her work or attend to the customers she normally handles
Useful expressions that can be used in this context are "to represent someone " "to take over someone's illness coverage " or "to step in for someone "
For example I had a car accident on my way to a meeting with a client yesterday morning
Fortunately my colleague was able to step in for me
Something more formal would be to say fortunately my colleague was able to cover for me
My colleague has therefore gone to the customer in my place and taken over my tasks
Could you also cover the presentation for me tomorrow I have a doctor's appointment
Also I have to give the presentation but I need to go to the doctor Can you do it for me
These expressions are not only helpful when it comes to illness but also when a colleague is on vacation
Could you take over Mr Kramer's vacation coverage next month
Good day Mr Kramer is currently on vacation I am his substitute How can I assist you
In this sentence we imagine that I am speaking with a customer
I wouldn't say I stepped in for Mr Kramer because that would be too colloquial
The expression "to give someone the green light" is very similar to giving something approval
This is also about someone giving me permission for something
We are thinking of a traffic light When it turns green we can start driving or walking
If someone gives me the green light for my project I can start implementing it
Here are two example sentences
The HR department has given us the go-ahead We can publish the report
The HR department said the report looks good so you can publish it like this
The boss finally gave me the green light for my concept
Also the boss finally officially allowed me to implement my concept
Adding someone to a carbon copy or blind carbon copy is an expression used in the context of emails
The abbreviation CC stands for Carbon Copy in English in German we just say Copy
That I am copying them on the email
That a copy of the email is sent to these additional recipients
The man informs these people about the content of the email without directly addressing them or expecting a response
In German for example we could say "I will put the managing director in CC "
So that he knows we will complete the project soon The managing director will be informed
Could you please put me in CC when you reply to the customer so I can stay updated
Lisa included me in the CC when she sent the email to the customer so I could track the communication
Let's take a closer look at the expression "regeln etwas unbürokratisch "
Germany is well known for its bureaucracy Bureaucracy refers to the entire administration of a country
And in Germany they say there is a lot of bureaucracy many rules and many laws that precisely dictate how something works
and the staff in the administration also hold themselves very strictly
When something is handled in a straightforward manner one finds a quick and simple solution to a problem
without having to follow many rules and regulations
When something is handled in an informal way a task can be completed quickly without unnecessary discussions
Let's look at a few examples
We have made the refund process hassle-free to ensure customer satisfaction
Also we have a customer here who was not satisfied with a product
Therefore he wanted a refund that is he wanted his money back
And we gave him his money back without the customer having to fill out many documents beforehand for example
It went very quickly and smoothly
Another example
We design our application processes as hassle-free as possible to avoid losing talented applicants
We make the process as simple and straightforward as possible
Let's now look at the expression "doing the service by the book "
This is essentially how I describe someone who only does the work that is expected of them
Nothing more and nothing less
This person is not very engaged does not make much effort and is not motivated
She also shows no particular interest in her work and does not come up with any own ideas
We can say for example that Erik only works by the book because he is dissatisfied with his salary
Erik no longer makes an effort
He only does what is expected of him nothing more
Since the new boss came many employees just go through the motions because they no longer feel valued
Also since the new boss arrived employees no longer feel treated
well Therefore they are no longer motivated to engage particularly
The expression "to take something on" is often used in the professional environment
When I say that I take on a task it means that I take care of the task
I am responsible for ensuring the task is completed
Here is an example sentence
Can you please take over my tasks while I'm on vacation
I ask the person to take care of my tasks while I am on vacation
We need someone to prepare the presentation for the meeting
I can gladly take care of that
In our daily work we also take on another meaning for example here
When my internship ended the company took me on
This means I did an internship at the company and the people at the company were very satisfied with me
They have offered me a permanent position
I am now a permanent employee there
We can also use the verb "übernehmen" reflexively Taking on
something means then taking on too much work or responsibility
and feel overwhelmed or stressed as a result
For example we could say Matthias has taken on this project too much
This means Matthias feels overwhelmed by this project
The project is too demanding or too extensive for him
Order our new colleague has overstepped and now needs help
The new colleague has taken on too much responsibility for a task or project and is now overwhelmed
He can't do it alone and now needs help
I feel like I've been working too much and overexerted myself in the last week
This means that I feel like I've taken on too much work
I feel overwhelmed
Coordinating with someone is a synonym for discussing something with someone
This means in business situations that you speak with another person to exchange information
To gather opinions make decisions together or check if everyone is on the same page
The vote is important so that the people can achieve their common goal
We should coordinate with our colleagues in the legal department before making this decision
Also before we decide we need to talk to the colleagues in the legal department and ask them what their opinion is
I need to coordinate with my colleagues about my vacation days
Also I need to talk to my colleagues and ask if it's okay if I take time off at the planned time
If you want to learn more about different verbs with voices feel free to watch my video on the topic
I will link it to you here above and in the video description
Imagine you are working with other colleagues on a project and a problem arises
You and your colleagues cannot solve this problem
What do you do then
You could say for example we need to escalate this issue upwards now
And that means we have to hand this problem over to our boss
We pass the problem on so that the person above us in the hierarchy can solve it and tell us what we should do
Here are two example sentences with this verb
We should have escalated this decision to Frau Schulz much earlier instead of thinking about it for so long
Also Frau Schulz is our supervisor and we should have told her about this problem much earlier
Because the employee could not solve the customer's problem he escalated it to his supervisor

When you hear the phrase "abstriche machen " you might first think of Corona
In medicine a smear refers to the removal of skin or mucous membrane for
examination But that's not what we're talking about now
The expression "Abstriche machen " always in the plural also has another meaning
Let's look at an example sentence
To meet the deadline we have to compromise on the quality of the work
This is about the quality of the work on this project not being as high as desired
Because the deadline must be met
We don't have that much time The expression "make compromises" means that you
have to make concessions when it comes to tasks or goals
One must accept limitations in order to fulfill a certain task
Let's look at some more examples
We will not compromise on the quality of our products
How can we still save money
Also we want to save money but we don't want the quality of our products to suffer
Either we simply cannot find any applicants who meet
all our requirements or we have to make compromises
Also there are no applicants for the open position who meet all the requirements
We also need to relax the requirements
We will probably have to hire a candidate who does not meet all of our requirements
The term "understaffed" means that a company or department does not have enough employees to handle all the tasks
We can say that our customer service is currently understaffed
Therefore longer wait times may occur
We don't have enough customer service staff Or the restaurant was
understaffed that evening so guests had to wait a long time for their food
There were simply not enough people working in the kitchen and service so everything moved much slower than usual
What is the actual difference between the terms colleague and employee
Is there even a difference
A colleague is a person who works with me
On the same hierarchical level or in the same area
We can say that I am meeting with my colleagues today to discuss the project
The term employee or employee refers to any person who works in a company
We can say that in our company we have over 500 employees
But be careful when a boss or a boss talks about the people who work one level below them
Then he usually does not call these people colleagues but employees
I refer to a colleague who works at the same level as me not as an employee
This can come across as disrespectful
