My name is Maria, I am a German teacher and your language coach.

especially in the oral exam.
But are you sure that you ask correct questions in German?

Are you ready? Then let's get started!
Let's go!
As I said, there are direct and indirect questions.
What does that mean exactly?
Direct questions start and end with a question mark.
Direct questions are usually main clauses.
The verb is here in the first place.
For example with yes-no questions.
Are you from Germany?
Or in the second place like with w-questions.
Where are you from?
Both examples are direct questions.
So direct questions are what you ask someone directly in a conversation.
But what are indirect questions?
Indirect questions are subordinate clauses.
And the verb in a subordinate clause is of course at the end.
So indirect questions are usually longer sentences.
Indirect questions often end not with a question mark but with a dot.
For example
I would like to know where you are from.
But such questions can also end with a question mark.
May I ask where you are from?
Remember, at the end of the question there is a question mark when the sentence begins with the verb.
In the second clause the verb is at the end because it is a subordinate clause.
Do we actually need a subordinate clause connector?
We have something better here.
The question word here has the function of a connector.
So practical!
We actually already learn indirect questions in the A2 course.
But they are also important at all other language levels.
Can you already form an indirect question?
Great!
Then feel free to write them in the comments.
Now I would like to give you a little more information about indirect questions
so that you sound like a true German professional.
You can use these sentence beginnings for indirect questions.
I'll show you a formal and an informal version.
Can you please tell me?
Or
Can you please tell me?
Do you know?
Or
Do you know?
Do you have any idea?
Do you perhaps have an idea?
Can you tell me?
I wanted to ask you.
Questions with the subjunctive 2 always sound more polite.
Could you please tell me?
Or
Could you please tell me?
Could you perhaps tell me?
You can also use the following sentence beginnings.
I would like to know.
May I ask?
I'll show you direct and indirect questions.
How long have you been learning German?
Could you please tell me?
How long have you been learning German?
This is an informal question.
Please form a formal question and write it in the comments.
I'm sure you can do it.
What is your email address?
Could you please tell me what your email address is?
Please repeat after me.
This is also a good pronunciation exercise.
What do you do for a living?
Could you please tell me what you do for a living?
When is the train coming?
Do you know when the train is coming?
Where is the next ATM?
Do you have any idea where the next ATM is?
How long does the exam take?
Do you perhaps have any idea how long the exam takes?
Which languages do you still speak?
I would like to know which languages you still speak.
How can I sign up for the German course?

Very easy. The link is below this video.
Which books do we need for the lessons?
I wanted to ask you which books we need for the lessons.
Where did you learn German so well?
I'm interested in where you learned German so well.
I hope on my channel.
By the way, have you subscribed to the channel?
Have you subscribed to the channel?
Please do so so that you don't miss any more videos.
How long have you been living in Germany?
May I ask how long you have been living in Germany?
Or even more politely,
may I ask how old you are?
May I ask how old you are?
Or how young?
Let's practice.
I have two tasks for you.
Task 1.
I have already prepared the beginning of the sentence for you.
You just have to continue writing the question.
Where do you like to go on vacation?
I would like to know where you like to go on vacation.
How often do you exercise?
I am interested in how often you exercise.
When was your last movie visit?
Could you please tell me when your last movie visit was?
Did you make it? Great!
Now comes task number 2.
Now answer my questions in the comments.
Use this task as a speaking exercise.
After each question there is a short break
and you speak your answer out loud.
Where do you like to go on vacation?
How nice!
How often do you exercise?
Oh really?
When was your last movie visit?
Sounds good!
I am looking forward to your answers.
You may ask me
what I do when the question does not start with a W-word.
What about yes-no questions?
A very good question!
I will show you an example.
Do you speak English?
This is a direct question, a yes-no question,
because we don't have a question word.
And now comes the indirect question.
I would like to know if you speak English.
Aha! So if there is no question word,
we take the conjunction of the word.
Very easy!
Let's form a few more yes-no questions.
Do you have time?
Could you please tell me if you have time?
Do you have time?
Are you doing well?
I am interested in whether you are doing well.
Are you doing well?
I am, if I can record videos for you.
Can I pay with a card?
Do you know if I can pay with a card?
Is there a toilet here?
Do you know if there is a toilet here?
This is urgent!
Easy, right?
Please try to write a formal version in the comments.
I am looking forward to reading your sentences in the comments.
And now I have an exercise for you.
Are you ready?
Task 1.
Form corresponding indirect questions with my sentence
and write them in the comments.
Do you live in Germany?
I would like to know if you live in Germany.
Do you have children?
Could you please tell me if you have children?
I have two children.
Do you have time next Sunday?
May I ask if you have time next Sunday?
Task 2.
Answer my questions in the comments.
Use this task again as a speaking exercise.
After each question there is a short break
and you speak your answer out loud.
Do you live in Germany?
Great!
Do you have children?
Thank you for your answer.
Do you have time next Sunday?
Great!
I am looking forward to your answers in the comments.
So let's summarize what we have learned today.
Questions are super important in everyday life,
but also in language tests.
That's why you need to know how to form them correctly
and how to make indirect questions out of them.
An indirect question is a subordinate clause.
So before the indirect question there is always a main clause.
With W-Questions the question word replaces the subordinate clause connector
and with Yes-No-Questions we remove the connector.
So I would like to know if you understood everything.
Let me know.

Take care and bye!
