Welcome back One of the joys of doing these lessons is that it forces me to revisit some of
my old work and in doing so I find mistakes or I just miss parts like the introduction to Jane
And the same with today's song it's a beautiful poignant song full of beautiful sadness It'
s a fan favorite and I read online yesterday someone's view that it would have been the best
If they put it on hardwood and silk and twine it's Mike Herron's Quantum 1968
You don't have to play it in C G C G C D which I'm going to do today so it's C G C G C D D
It does have some advantages as you can get some of the lines in that you might not be able to
in standard tuning so it starts off with a quite long introduction which is just based around two
Chords which is if you're thinking in your head that it's a minor which I'm playing on the two and five
and four on my five fourth and third strings
It goes to G which is OH 2020
and you can get the timing of the changes just by thinking to yourself
s starts off with some small ones on top of that so the first one goes
so that's two four on the second third and second strings and the third string is four five
four oh sorry four five four open four and then there's another one that follows it which is
which is two on the fourth string two open four on the third string two on the second string four
I just put those in as examples there are other little ones they do and then not
long into it it then standardizes in my hearing onto these two riffs back to back so
The first one goes I'm playing on the third
string two four five four two open so it's
and then the second one is similar to that it goes two four five two
so two four five four two this time it's
so first one
when I'm playing that four I usually play the second fret of
the fifth string along with it to give you the A minor sound
and then the next one goes
and then the part which you
Those are the little runs that are played I think five six seven times and
then there's another major piece that comes in the instrumental piece goes
so this song itself so I'll take you to that so we' re on the third string again so it's five four five
and I'll play the G chord which is O two and four on the fifth fourth and third string
five two four on the third
and the next part is four and five on your fourth and fifth strings six and seven
nine and seven that repeats five seven six seven and nine
It finishes with 12 and 11 12s on the fifth 11s on the
fourth That's 11 and nine nine and seven seven and six
four and
five so
Just before they start singing there's another little one that comes in
which I'll show you some starts on the fourth string on the fourth fret
That's four six seven go back onto the third string on the fourth fret
seven six
and then we're into the song itself so it starts with my friend that's a G chord
That's a C chord I'm playing it on the fourth and fifth strings
That's a D chord so that's six seven and six
Do you think it's a minor chord with two five and four on the fifth fourth and third
strings Do you think we're learning more Do you think so Do you think we're learning
So G chord which is oh two do you think we will is a D chord across the bottom three frets o
ree strings of the second fret we will be sure
That's going up to E minor of all the song there is and just go back
to D so my friend see the nice and do you
think we'll learn more do you think we will
The next part is C which I play 5 4 5 on the fourth and third
string Do we step on somewhere
G do we my friend to A minor aga
G
and then the instrumental section returns
and one to the chorus and starts in A minor
e chords are C
ree different ways but the first one is playing
which is four and five
which is zero two and zero on the fourth and fifth strings
so that's the bar and the cross on the three strings of the fourth fre
And repeats again let's do it one more time it's A minor and keep the fire burning
And here if you want to play a different C B minor A minor you can
come all the way up to the top which is quite attractive which is 14 12
Right so it's 14 12 12 bar across 11th with top finger on the
12th fret slide it down two to nine and ten on top sunshine
That's your E minor again and just another way to play that C B minor A minor you can play it
Is C so you can play up five and seven
so it's bright it's five and seven sun is the B more than six
and the A minor is two and four on the fifth and fourth strings
and then it goes to another prolonged slightly prolonged instrumental part which
is again based around that A minor to G and you either play or be thinking of
Come back and sing we kept looking long so that looking long a
minor to G We can play strong minus your G and you do another
and then the I Ching talks softly in A minor and I play a bar of A minor to G
all parts are in A
minor and then another
up to G
still so it's the voice of running water
Running and you get cold it turns to G
D which is played by and across the second fret on the bottom three strings to me
at's E minor so you just move that D up
two frets and then it says I still love
So that's it C to B minor A change you can play that or I still love to see a rainbow
Sing the chorus again
A minor
let's do it one more time
and then it has another instrumental section the one we had earlier
the end of it shame if it has to end it's such a beautiful song
I hope you've enjoyed it and that it's given you enough information to play it
the way you'd like to play it if you just want to use the same chords in standard
Tuning they will work fine you'll just have to look at the instrumental parts in a different way
