Blue Origin just Dropped “Super Heavy” New Glenn Update after success to Beat SpaceX Starship, but…
It is remarkable to witness. Shortly after completing its first fully successful mission, Blue Origin announced a new round of upgrades for New Glenn, likely in an effort to keep pace with SpaceX’s rapidly evolving rockets, especially the ever-advancing Starship.
Yet the central challenge remains. At the very same moment, SpaceX reached another major launch milestone with Falcon 9 and the Starlink program, extending its lead even further.
Let us explore what this means in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

It can be said that after twenty-five years of preparation, Blue Origin has finally found meaningful momentum in 2025. There is still some disappointment because the company has completed only two flights this year. However, the progress made during the second mission has helped offset much of that frustration and has given the team a renewed sense of confidence.
That confidence is stronger than ever. Almost immediately, Blue Origin announced bold new upgrades to its orbital rocket.
In its latest web update, the company introduced a “Super Heavy class” version of New Glenn. This upgraded model is called New Glenn 9x4, which refers to the number of engines on each stage. It may also be referred to as New Glenn Block 2 or New Glenn V2.

In this new version, the total number of engines increases significantly. The booster will move from seven engines to nine engines, while the second stage will increase from two engines to four engines. This places the New Glenn booster in a configuration that begins to resemble SpaceX’s Falcon booster.
With these changes, liftoff thrust will increase from 1,750 tons to 2,250 tons. The second stage will rise from 1,450 tons to 2,900 tons. These figures use the engines’ current thrust levels. Blue Origin appears to have upgraded both stages, which could increase the thrust further to 2,610 tons on the booster and 3,840 tons on the second stage. The reason behind this improvement will be revealed in the next section.
