If a rocket were a living organism, the engine would be its lifeblood — playing a vital role in sustaining the entire body. The moment the engine suddenly encounters a problem, that rocket is essentially a discarded pile of scrap metal. And while SpaceX has the reliable Merlin engine and the powerful Raptor, Blue Origin has failed with the BE-4, an engine that has been researched and developed for over a decade.
Calling the BE-4 a complete failure may be too harsh on Blue Origin, but it is difficult to ignore the reality that the latest New Glenn explosion may have been largely connected to the very BE-4 engine that the company has heavily promoted, mass-produced, and supplied to ULA.
The official cause of the May 28 New Glenn explosion has not yet been announced, but much of the aerospace engineering community has focused its attention on the BE-4's turbopump system—and not without reason. Looking back at the abnormal thrust issue that occurred during one of New Glenn’s previous flights, concerns about the engine's internal systems have persisted. The FAA's investigation into that incident identified a cryogenic fluid leak that caused a hydraulic line to freeze, suggesting that Blue Origin may be facing a series of interconnected system-level challenges rather than an isolated failure.
