Crash course in wood movement - Avoid the pith!

Avoid the pith! The pith is the center of the tree. It is the most unstable material and moves the most. If possible, cut it out and use the adjacent material. Wood will expand and contract along the grain. So the left and right sections of this board will mostly expand and contract along the boards thickness. This is ideal in most cases. The center area, the pith, has the grain in a more circular shape. The grain will always want to "flatten out" over time, which will result in the board cupping in the direction necessary to flatten the grain.
