Alaska, the last frontier Only the most adventurous come to live on the edge In the vast unspoiled wilderness Woo, here we go Oh my gosh If you wanna live in Alaska The real amenities are outside It's out of a fairy tale It's gonna be amazing That's the view I was looking for And those views change around the clock Are you kidding me? Wow And every day is an adventure Alaska is not for sissies When you are living Alaska We just love Alaska 24 hours of daylight in the summer time Beautiful My wife and I moved up here for one year 25 years ago People ask when we're coming home This is our home Hi there Let's come on over here Let's go do some gold panning Sounds exciting Let's go kids Who's excited guys? Me And we're moving from Kentucky To Alaska What do you think guys? Looks gorgeous We are gold fishing We went to go visit Denali The mountain And holy moly Something to fall in love with Moving here to Alaska And getting the opportunity to go out And experience the nature and stuff Something we're looking forward to McKinnon struck it rich over here I think After Casey landed a job As a physician's assistant in Fairbanks She and Michael couldn't wait To move their three kids McKinnon, Cruz and Cannon 4,300 miles from Kentucky To start their Alaska adventure She mentioned Fairbanks, Alaska I was like are you crazy? That's kind of far away Every time I talk to him I say Alaska, Alaska Been in Kentucky for 42 years Come up here to the last frontier It's going to be an adventure I'm very excited about that We wanted a new beginning We absolutely fell in love with Fairbanks This was some place that If we were going to start something new This would be the place to do it You can always look back and say What would have happened if we would have moved But I don't want to look back and say what if I'm making a cube You're making a killing over there Whoa Okay Holy moly You're rich sis You're buying dinner Fairbanks was a gold miner's dream Back in the early 1900s When the town experienced its first gold rush Today It's the second largest city in Alaska And it's located only 200 miles south Of the Arctic Circle Well this is certainly something we can't do in Kentucky I will tell you that That's for sure We might go panning but it'll probably be for coal instead of gold I'm sure I think we should really start looking for At least three to four bedrooms with the kids That's something we have to have Yeah You know being in Alaska How cold it gets in the winter We need to have a garage so we can keep our cars in Because I don't want to have to get up every morning We need to start those things Exactly And then of course you have to take into account work You know have to be close to the hospital I would like to have some nice views Hopefully of the mountain range And if we're moving all the way here to Alaska I want the feel of Alaska in the house I agree I mean if we're going to come to Alaska We might as well go all out And you only live once So might as well do what we can That's for sure We've been approved for $500,000 If it's got everything on the wish list Maybe even a little bit above that Our budget might go up a little bit Absolutely Kids keep panning okay Their real estate agent Elizabeth Shock Is hoping the Dodie's lucky streak continues She's taken them to a house In the Gold Stream Valley area About 20 minutes northwest of town It's right next to the Gold Stream public use area That has 2,000 acres of dog food Dog mushing and cross country ski trails Do school buses come out this far The school buses will actually stop At the main road And they can freeze there I guess They can Zero will seem really cold The first time it hits zero But once it goes to 30 below Zero's going to feel like springtime Wow I love it Beautiful place beautiful property It's absolutely gorgeous I love it out here So this house has 3 bedrooms 2 baths It's almost 2,600 square feet It's on 20 acres 20 acres that's awesome Lots of room for the kids to play And it's $329,000 We have our own cabin You have your own cabin We have a guest cabin over there Friends and family come to visit See the kitchen here off to the left Wow blue Kind of small But good size pantry Which is good I haven't seen much of this Or in the kitchen I do not cook It's kind of outdated though The countertops I like the cabinets though But the cabinets are nice I do like the cabinets I like the ceilings It has an Alaskan feel to it It's really nice I really don't like much of the linoleum floors We're going to have to change those out And we have the pellet stove here It's a secondary heat source Really easy to use You just dump the bag of pellets in Turn it on and off it goes Makes it nice and cozy in the winter I like all the windows too I love the view The true Alaskan nature at its best I bet you probably see moose Coming right through the yard And who knows what else As long as I'm in here And they're out there I think I'm good Let's check out what is up here A little bathroom A little dated A little bit more than dated This is the bedroom Blue carpet I guess we can make it a boy's room I just think the size is kind of small Especially if it's three bedroom And we have to put two kids In one room Maybe like a little sitting room here Little sitting room So small size bedroom Very small So where is the master Not the one downstairs It has to be What is that Say what That's something new Michael and Casey Doty Are taking the giant leap From their life in Kentucky To a new life and new home In Fairbanks, Alaska What is that That's something new Interesting I dare you go ahead You put ladies first I'll catch if you fall A little bit shaky here Michael the view is amazing up here This is like being in a castle The kids would love this I'm afraid of heights anyway I'm up here now We're staying I can't get back down Oh my goodness I can see Cruz dangling Cannon right here Don't tell mommy 20 plus acres of property All the peaceful The nature itself What the real Alaska feel The land Can't beat that But the bedrooms are so small How cool would that be To grow up in a house And have a tower there You can put a lock or something I'll live up there if you want me to But for the kids right now I don't know if that's gonna happen I like it This is a nice neighborhood In this neighborhood You'll be about 7 minutes from the hospital That's not too bad Alaskan views are big on their wish list So the next place Elizabeth is taking them Sits on Chena Ridge High above Fairbanks But still close to town It's a really interesting home Super energy efficient Net zero home Which means really no utility cost Here we are on the left This is it Oh my goodness You've got to be kidding me Look at that view This could be our front yard That's amazing Now this is a blue house Being from Kentucky We like the color blue So that's just fine This house is almost 2400 square feet Has three bedrooms, two and a half baths It's on 1.4 acres Priced at $475,000 That's good, that's under our budget This house is mainly solar powered These shutters are all over the house And they really serve two purposes One in the summer when it's 24-hour daylight To help keep out some of the light at night So you can sleep But also in the winter Help keep the heat inside Go ahead and try it It's going to take a while then It's not too bad So this is my job Every morning and night To come and open the shutters Oh wow, this is beautiful Oh my goodness I love the concrete floors also They've got the little turtle It's radiant floor heat So your toes will stay nice and warm And the masonry stove Will heat up and radiate heat I love this, it's beautiful How pretty is this When the kids are getting in trouble, time out Probably frown upon that Why are there two doors To cook a pizza up there Michael, here's your gourmet kitchen This is what I need, a nice kitchen I love the cabinets Beautiful But this kitchen, I like the contemporary look It's stainless steel And remember, all these appliances Are run off electricity Which is part of your solar net zero And utilities So I won't get in trouble For leaving the lights on anymore The oven's kind of tiny though It's small, that's for sure Is there any other one The pizza oven That's about it Will this take us to the garage There's not a garage Can you build us one Anything's possible It's under the budget So there's a little bit left over With the utilities being so low That would help out also I saw this room when we came in I wanted to check it out It's a movie theater room This is great This might be something we could maybe convert Into a playroom for the kids I don't think so This is daddy's playroom right here I see how it's going to be I can sit back and watch the cats Beat Louisville all the time Can't beat it This is great though, this is nice This is a bonus for sure This is the master bedroom Yeah, it has to be This is nice, this is real nice It's a little bit small This would be the master bathroom in here This is gorgeous Okay, see we might have a problem Here in the hallway There's a bear staring at us Well, that would be kind of scary To see in the middle of the night though I have to say Bedroom here Okay, this is nice, very cute Looks like this is a divider It might open up to the other bedroom That might be a problem Having the boys in one and her in the other She needs her privacy It could have shouting matches, right Was this a bathroom over here Yeah, nice guys I like the washer dryer upstairs Could we even fit A day's worth of laundry in here At least the kids won't fit in it They won't get stuck I really like the house We want three or four bedrooms All honesty, it's really a two bedroom With a split down one of them I don't know if that will work with the kids Energy Definitely would help in the winter time It has the most amazing view It does When you think Alaska This is what you think about Want you all to look for Chad Street Okay Later that day The whole Doty family's on a field trip To check out an open house north of town It's this really nice house I think it's all one level And it's supposed to have like a couple of acres with it If we can find it I think it's on the right What does this sign say This one is Yellow Snow Road Do you want to stay away from roads like that Yellow Snow Road Maybe it's in Are we there yet We may be a little bit lost Nobody gets lost in Alaska What are you talking about And we may be a little bit lost The Doty family's been searching For nearly an hour Hoping to find an open house North of Fairbanks I think we should maybe turn around I don't think we're going the right way I'm ready just to give up The next day They decide to stick with their agent Elizabeth She's taken them to a listing That just hit the market And checks off a lot of boxes on their wish list In this area you'll have A lot of names coming through Maybe a link here and there That kind of elucidates So you don't really see them I like how it's sitting back It's a nice long driveway Oh wow It's gorgeous It's got that Alaska feel to it Yeah It's pretty big house It's 3400 square feet Three bedroom, three bath Attached two car heated garage Sits on two acres And they're asking 379,000 Okay Oh my gosh I was not expecting that My goodness High ceilings are great, aren't they I love it It opens everything up Yeah, so many windows Kitchen's a little bit small How do you feel about that With the open bar area here I think it makes it look a lot larger It'd be nice for entertaining It would be, yeah I feel like we're kind of cramped in here And I'm in here all the time I'd say you're never here anyway So what's the difference I think this definitely needs work Going up here It doesn't go along with the rest of the kitchen I don't think Oh, good bathroom It's a full size bathroom downstairs That's nice And I think we've got Two bedrooms down here Master upstairs Okay, well this is Beautiful But it kind of freaks me out a little bit With three little kids This is a hazard right here I guess this would be the master bathroom This looks like a dresser I think they just made it into a sink Maybe they did We can put our clothes in there And wash our face Two closets Why can you see through the closet It looked like it used to be a sauna Oh my gosh, I think you're right It used to be a sauna They made it into a closet I prefer the sauna myself Me too Nice open space Really nice, I like this It's finished Play room This is awesome I like the size of it 3,000 square feet We have the heated garage That's a big plus If you're going to live here in Alaska Then you have that loft area That just totally freaks me out It freaks me out to look over it It's got the three bedrooms And then the basement The basement's great Great place for the kids to play It's a nice place To give them even more options Elizabeth got a fixer-upper on Violet Drive Ten minutes east of town That has lots of potential And is below their budget How cute, I love this Elizabeth, it's so cute This house is 2,400 square feet It has four bedrooms, two baths It's on three acres It has a two-car garage And they're asking 299,000 That's really good If it needs some updating We'll have some room to do that Great Arctic entryway Ceilings are kind of low I feel like a giant in here It's a little cramped feeling Just a bit dated They like white I think eventually For the price and everything We need to upgrade Pantry maybe Hope so I have not seen this Which animal Is only found in the Arctic Is it the polar bear Fur seal Or beluga whale Which animal is only found In the Arctic The answer is the polar bear They have a thick layer of fat And a double coat of fur To insulate them from the cold temperatures Their paws even have hairs and bumps To give them traction on the ice Pantry Hopefully Washer and dryer in the kitchen I have not seen this I can multitask Cook dinner and do laundry at the same time I like how it's all open though Bedroom and bathroom from the kitchen Looks like the master Please don't say it's the master It's a one-person bathroom here You and I both could use No way This is A closet It's a bedroom Office Maybe We're not going to the gym anymore All these stairs It's enough workout for me Oh goodness I know if the kids ever get in trouble They can just come up here I can't get up here This could be their hideaway room This would be a cool little Kind of play area for them They would love it up here You're going to be concussed Here in a second Large deck, I like that The stuff that's dated This definitely makes up for it Can you imagine northern lights out here Be gorgeous We got some really good stuff with the house And some stuff that needs work Property is nice Three acres for the kids to run around in That's great No neighbors that we can see But good price range So we got some money we can put into it To get all those things that we do want It takes a lot of work Put your hand out My daughter loves horses So to take some of those things That she loves from Kentucky And bring it to Alaska Maybe take her horseback riding And get her in with some lessons So we can do that all as a family I like this one You like this one So Michael it's been a while Since you've done this About 30 years Getting the hang of it yet Can't wait for the kids to end up Horseback riding Kenna's going to love it This is so fun But I think we're going to have to Probably pick a house So what about the tower house It had all that acreage Which is great That tower for us Had been nice Especially at night Looking at the northern lights In the winter But the kitchen was so outdated And small It did have a garage We had that violet drive house It was very nice When you drove up to it It definitely had some pluses With that garage It did But once you walked in It was just really too outdated For me I think Maybe we should just go ahead And take that one off the list I agree with you So what about the blue house You can't beat the views on that one And also I love that fireplace That stone fireplace Zero energy That cut down on our utilities big time Yeah but with that You have the small oven And then you have the small washer and dryer All which is very difficult For five people But the biggest issue No garage Well let's talk about Lancaster Drive Beautiful cathedral ceilings I love the kitchen Really nice kitchen Then you turn around And you have that loft That loft yeah it was scary Especially with the kids Really really did love the amount of space it had It had a lot of space Yeah but that really nice garage And huge basement But the kids bedrooms downstairs That would be too far away from us I've got one in mind That I really really like And I think we can make it work What do you think Lancaster Drive That's the one I was thinking The kids will love it Absolutely love that house The cathedral ceilings when you walk in All the windows and the light coming in And we had room 3,000 square feet That was a big decider for us Love the basement and the garage We'll be able to do something with that loft upstairs Maybe we could put some rails around it I'd rather have it closed off for the door We'll figure something out Nobody's allowed on the balcony I definitely have fallen in love with Alaska Not many people can say that they've lived here And I value that This is going to be awesome Excited to start this new chapter Very excited We can't wait
