Hello friends, how are you? Now that people are becoming much more aware
of longevity and healthspan and epigenetics, there's a lot of conversation happening
on the connection between chronic disease, the microbiome, mental well-being and diet.
So let's explore what the science is so far and it's getting better every day.
So chronic disease, microbiome, well-being and diet are interconnected through several mechanisms.
Poor nutrition such as high sugar and refined carbohydrate intake is linked to chronic
diseases like obesity and diabetes which in turn are linked to many diseases, cardiovascular disease,
cerebrovascular disease, degenerative disorders and even in some cases autoimmune illness.
Therefore a healthy diet can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation which is
connected with all these problems. The gut microbiome also influences brain function and mood
through what is called the gut-brain axis. A balanced diet supports a healthy microbiome
which can improve mental health. Also nutrients like omega-3s, vitamins and minerals can help
reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety by modulating inflammation and neurogenesis.
How does the microbiome influence mental health? Some people have been asking. So the microbiome
influences mental health through what is called the gut-brain axis. A bi-directional communication
system involving neural, endocrine and immune pathways. Gut microbes produce neurotransmitters
like serotonin and GABA. GABA stands for gamma amino butyric acid and both these affect mood
and behavior. Dysbiosis or imbalance in gut bacteria is linked to mental depression
and the mental disorders including mental depression, stress-related anxiety and other
associated mental issues like anger, hostility, guilt, shame etc. Diet plays a crucial role
and consuming probiotics and prebiotics can improve microbiome health and mental well-being.
Research suggests that targeting the microbiome could be a strategy
for treating a lot of mental illnesses. Okay, so what are some of the common
dietary interventions that can actually improve both physical and mental well-being and also
what I call reduce inflammation and have a long-term healing effect on the body.
Okay, so here are some of the most important things that I can suggest
specific foods to improve mental well-being. Specific foods that can improve mental well-being
include fatty fish, salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are linked to
reduce depression and other mental symptoms. You can also find these in vegetable sources like
avocado and others. Leafy greens, spinach and kale contain folic acid which can counter depression.
Fermented foods, yogurt, kefir and kimchi improve gut health reducing anxiety and stress.
Berries which are high in antioxidants help prevent depression symptoms. Nuts and seeds
provide serotonin production through tryptophan. So they provide tryptophan for serotonin production
but also actually influence other neuropeptides. Nuts and seeds which are pretty
commonly available now from so many sources. To that add meditation because meditation can
improve gut microbiota composition. Studies have shown that regular deep meditation
such as that produced practice by Tibetan monks and others like myself can enrich certain beneficial
bacteria like bacterioidetes, provotella and Fecalipacterium. These changes are associated
with reduced risk of anxiety, depression and cardiovascular diseases. Meditation also
influences gut health by reducing stress and cortisol levels which can positively affect
the gut-brain axis. What else? I mentioned omega-3 fatty acids and I did mention
nuts and seeds. Did I miss anything? I'm just looking at my notes. A little bit more about
omega-3 fatty acids. They are anti-inflammatory and they also enhance serotonin activity.
They also are neuroprotective and help in neurogenesis. So omega-3s support brain
structure and function promoting neurogenesis and protect against neurodegeneration.
They also help stabilize moods in conditions like bipolar disorder when used alongside other
treatments. One last thing, whole grains are also very important in that whole grains can affect
the microbiome and actually are very useful in stabilizing homeostasis. However,
you know a lot of people are concerned these days about gluten, entropathy etc.
But from all the literature I've seen whole grains help maintain stable blood sugar levels
and reduce mood swings. So there's a lot you can do to improve your mental well-being
without pharmaceutical intervention and a lot you can do to prevent chronic disease and even
reverse it. Let me know if this is useful. Take care my friends and of course Digital Dharma is
