Dude, I'm ready to delete the apps.
All the people I'm meeting, they just don't have compatible personalities.
Stop right there, Bestie.
A landmark study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
argues otherwise.
Samantha Joel, the study's lead author, and her team
did an analysis of 11,196 couples from 43 studies.
What they found was that the person you choose
is not nearly as important as the relationship that you build.
What? No way. That can't be real.
Tis true.
They found that your partner's personality
So what, then? You just ignore their personality completely?
I mean, just don't focus so much on whether they fit your type or check your boxes.
And instead, think about how you're engaging with each other
and if the relationship leaves you feeling satisfied.
Interesting.
Okay, so then they're saying, like,
it doesn't matter if he's, like, into hiking and I'm not.
Ew, he wants to leave the house? Throw him away.
You just said—
Okay, fine. Yes.
A great relationship was less about finding the perfect partner
or changing your current one, but building the relationship itself.
Setting up conditions that allow it to flourish.
The grass is greener where you water it.
Exactly. Grass is outside.
You need sunlight, you know.
Okay, so the next date I'm on, I should focus less on if we have
shared intros or even, like, compatible lifestyles,
but what kind of relationship we seem to naturally lean into.
I mean, yeah, like, if there's deal-breaker incompatibilities,
like, you want kids and she doesn't, then, like, obvi, don't pursue it.
But otherwise, apparently, how you feel now can be somewhat diagnostic
for how you'll feel later on.
Your perception of the relationship's satisfaction and dynamic
is what mattered most, according to science.
According to science.
But who knows? Science changes all the time.
It's constantly evolving.
I mean, the first doctor who suggested that we wash our hands
before surgery was ridiculed to the point of a mental breakdown
and put in an asylum.
That's crazy.
So many people died.
Science is scary.
Terrifying.
Have fun in your day.
Thanks.
Yeah, I'm gonna go...
just do that.
Actually, no, I don't think I am.
No, I'm kind of...
No, I'll stay inside with you, actually.
You're really rubbing off on me.
