Bragging is an interesting phenomenon in today's world.
It's evolved.
It's spawned tiny little mutant babies that have taken over our in-person and digital
landscape.
There's just so many new ways to do it.
There's the zeitgeisty humblebrag.
Ugh, I just ruined my streak of perfect test scores this year.
My first 98.
The weird flex.
My cousin is like so hot, okay?
That I'm not bragging, I'm complaining bragging.
I just wish people liked me for me, you know?
Not because I'm like beautiful, or because I'm talented, or because I'm insanely rich
and like supes generous.
I just wish they would like me.
But there are definitely some brags that I cannot stand and that everyone should stop
immediately.
Because not only are they perpetuating damaging mindsets, they also just don't make any sense.
And they are...
Exhaustion as a status symbol.
Man, I work like so hard.
But you know what I mean, Anna.
I mean what?
We probably get like three hours of sleep between the two of us.
Me?
No, no.
I get like six to eight hours of sleep a night.
Unless I absolutely can't.
I mean the number one way people die in our industry is by falling asleep at the wheel.
And dude, if you're only getting three hours of sleep a night, I worry that you're causing
irreversible damage to your body and your mental health.
Escaping your pain as a source of pride.
Oh my god, I was like so drunk last night and then I bopped a couple of drugs at 3am.
It was crazy.
I was so wasted.
But then again, that's like every night, right?
You must be in so much pain.
I mean I can totally understand and relate to self-medicating as a coping mechanism,
but as your friend, I have to say this has been going on for a minute and I hope that
you recognize that it's an unhealthy way to process.
And honestly, it's probably exacerbating your problems because alcohol is a depressant.
Yeah, I guess I'm in deep pain.
Yeah, I'm not like other women.
You're right.
You're not like other women.
Other women don't brag about not being like other women like it's something to brag about.
Do you want to know how much my dad makes?
No.
Two million a month.
Okay.
Yeah, so we're like basically rich.
We?
Yeah.
Well, what do you contribute?
What?
What do you contribute to your father's business?
I can only assume that if you're claiming his wealth, then you must have some kind of
substantial contribution, whether that's a consultation role or some kind of administrative
position.
Oh, well.
Otherwise, you're just flaunting Daddy Walt's money as though I'm supposed to be impressed
that there's some man in a high-powered, prosperous position who happens to have a son and that
son happens to be talking to me at this moment in time.
And finally, one of the weirdest brags that people do, using their trauma as a way to
feel superior to others.
Wow.
I'm so sorry that happened to you.
Thanks.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, life happens to you, and I think it's what you make of it that counts,
you know?
Like how you grow from it.
Oh, my God.
Tell me about it.
I have so much trauma.
Oh, wow.
I'm so sorry.
Thanks, guys.
Like, I have more trauma than anyone I've ever met.
Like, if I put together both of y'all's trauma, it'd probably be like a fifth of my trauma.
Wow.
That sounds really hard.
Yeah, I've had like so many surgeries on my butthole.
Because if you flaunt your trauma, it's not trauma.
It's a story.
I'm Anna Akana.
Clearly, I'm annoyed.
