"For all those listeners who do not want to spoil their enjoyment of the Goldberg Variations by analysing such complications of counterpoint, it should be said that Bach also considered this dimension in his monumental keyboard exercise. It was not for nothing that he dedicated it to the ‘ amusing and enchanting’ of music lovers rather than the instruction of connoisseurs. Count Keyserlingk's wish for pieces ‘that would be so gentle and somewhat cheerful in character’ was taken to heart by Bach. Only three of the 30 variations are in G minor, most of them are cheerful and relaxed in mood, some are contemplative, some are brilliant, some are brash. The beauty of this music could not be better described than by an anonymous author for the Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek in 1788 when he described Bach's free, i.e. non-fugal, ‘Clavierwerke’:

‘But what are not the merits of Bach's other keyboard works [apart from the fugues]! How much life, novelty and pleasing melody still now that everything in the song is so refined! How much invention, what variety in all kinds of flavours, the artful and the gallant, the bound and the free style of writing, where harmony or melody prevails; there extreme difficulty for master hands, and here ease, even for somewhat practised lovers! How many good piano players have not produced his pieces! Was he not the creator of a completely different way of treating the keyboard instruments? Did he not give them excellent melody, expression and song in performance? He, the most profound connoisseur of all contrapuntal arts (and even the arts of the arts), knew how to make beauty subordinate to art.’
