【Classical music and nature 古典音樂小站】Johann Sebastian Bach: Prelude in C minor, BWV 921 (Harpsichord). This beautiful piece was played by Gunnar Johansen. It has common licence (Public Domain Mark 1.0 Universal), and is provided through musopen.org.

Although it is titled 'Prelude', no similar writing style or form can be found in Bach's other preludes.

The piece is divided into five sections, each with a different time signature and rhythm. The motives and rhythms themselves are extremely simple and repeated relentlessly. Consequently, the piece gives the impression of a catalogue of possibilities, showcasing the variety of harmonic progressions that can be achieved with simple motifs.

However, the piece has a strong ability to draw the listener into a trance-like state, a quality not derived from motivic development or contrapuntal techniques. Modern pianos still offer scope for further exploration of timbre, and as an unusual piece by Bach, it is certainly worth engaging with.

The video was filmed by Simone Schlegel near Habkern, Switzerland and was edited by Wenjing Ma.
