Haydn composed Symphony No. 104 in 1795 during his second trip to London. It is his last symphony. The premiere took place on 4 May 1795 during a benefit concert that Haydn gave for himself at the Haymarket Theatre in London, at which time Haydn was already 63 years old. Haydn probably composed the work in London in March/April 1795. He noted on the title page of the autograph: ‘795 The 12th which I have composed in England Sinfonia in D II .’ The composer wrote in his notebook about the premiere:

"On the 4th of May 1795 I gave my benefit concert at the Haymarket Theatre. The hall was full of a select company. a) First part of the Military Symphony; Aria [...]; Concert [...]; Duet [...] by me; a new symphony in D, namely the twelfth and last of the English ones; b) Second part of the Military Symphony; Aria [...], Concerto [...], Scena nuova by me, Mad. Banti (She sang very scanty)[6]. The whole company was extremely amused and so was I. I made four thousand guilders that evening. One can only do such a thing in England.‘

The Morning Chronicle reported on the premiere on 6 May 1795:

"More than half the pieces performed were by Haydn, and they afforded unquestionable evidence of the greatness and versatility of his abilities. [...] Haydn showed his appreciation to his well-meaning friends by writing a new symphony for the occasion, which some of the best connoisseurs believe surpasses all his other works in terms of fullness, richness and majesty in every movement. A gentleman, whose musical knowledge, taste and profound judgement are highly esteemed, expressed the following opinion: In the next fifty years composers would be little better than imitators of Haydn, and would produce little more than a second rehash. We hope this prophecy may prove false, but probability seems to confirm the prediction.‘
