The Piano Sonata in B minor, Hob. XVI:32 by Franz Joseph Haydn is a captivating musical journey that demonstrates the composer's mastery of classical sonata form. This late 18th-century four-movement composition for solo piano is proof of Haydn's With Sonata No. 32, taken from a group of six privately published in manuscript copies in 1776, we come from inspired gallantry to the resolute severity typical of Haydn's music in B minor (compare the String Quartets Op. 33, No. 1 and Op. 64, No. 2). In his later works, Haydn preferred a happy resolution in the major for his works in the minor. Here, however, the recapitulations of the strictly concentrated outer movements remain relentlessly in the minor throughout; and what had sounded brilliant or even frivolous in the exposition (in the dancing triplets of the first movement) is increasingly filled with anxious, nervous tension. The finale, with its obsessively hammering theme—the principal source of practically all the musical activity—and bizarre, disquieting moments of silence, is perhaps Haydn's most vehement sonata movement, and it culminates in a laconic coda in which the theme is thundered in empty octaves. Amid this tumult, the sweet, long-winded minuet in B major, which effectively serves as a substitute for a slow middle movement, spreads harmonic balm, and its dark and agitated B minor trio evokes the overall mood of the work. source: hyperion-records.co.uk
