Johannes Brahms composed Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90, in 1883.

Almost nothing is known about the creation of the Third Symphony; there are no letters, sketches or earlier versions. It was completed in Wiesbaden, where Brahms spent the summer of 1883. The premiere took place on 2 December 1883 in Vienna under the baton of Hans Richter.

Clara Schumann praised Brahms in a letter dated 11 February 1884:

“What a work, what poetry, the most harmonious mood throughout, all movements as if cast from the same mould, a heartbeat, each movement a jewel! – How one is enveloped from beginning to end by the mysterious magic of forest life! I couldn't say which movement is my favourite. In the first, I am immediately enchanted by the splendour of the awakening day, how the sun's rays glisten through the trees, everything comes to life, everything breathes cheerfulness, it is delightful! In the second, the pure idyll, I listen to the people praying around the little forest chapel, the trickling of the brook, the playing of the beetles and mosquitoes – it is a buzzing and whispering around you that makes you feel completely enveloped in all the bliss of nature. The third movement seems to me like a pearl, but it is a grey one, surrounded by a tear of melancholy; at the end, the modulation is quite wonderful. The last movement follows magnificently with its passionate upswing: but the excited heart is soon calmed again, and finally there is transfiguration, which even appears in the development motif in a beauty for which I can find no answer.”
