"Allegedly composed in 1804, the original manuscript, owned by J. Kafka in Vienna, has the inscription in an unknown hand: Sonate grande. The oldest edition, published in May 1805, has the title: Grande Sonate pour le Pianoforte composée et dediée à Monsieur le C. & J. R. A. Par Louis van Beethoven, Op. 53. A Vienne au Bureau des arts et d'industrie."
