Schubert completed his last three piano sonatas in September 1828, just a few months before his death at the age of 31.

The almost complete surviving manuscripts of the last three piano sonatas indicate that they were written in two phases: a preliminary sketch, probably written in the spring of 1828, and a complete, final version, probably notated in September 1828, which contains many notable rearrangements and changes.

In the 1820s, Schubert had begun to experiment with cyclical devices, whereby motifs or themes introduced in the first movement recur elsewhere to create a heightened sense of 'belonging' between the different sections and movements.

In considering this sonata, as well as the other works in the triptych, pianists and musicologists have pondered the notion of Schubert's "late style", i.e. whether a sense of his own mortality is reflected in a change of compositional style in the works of the last years of his life. Considering that Schubert was only 31 years old when he died, it seems almost inappropriate to attribute a "late style" to his work, but one must also bear in mind that in early 19th century Vienna the average life expectancy of a man was 36-40 years, and that Schubert created a huge body of work in his (by today's standards) short life.
