The Piano Sonata No. 21 (op. 53) 'Waldstein' is a three-movement sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is dedicated to his friend and patron, Count Waldstein. Beethoven sketched it in December 1803, shortly before beginning work on the opera Fidelio. In August 1804, he submitted it to the Leipzig publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, together with the sonatas op. 54 and op. 57. Strict in sonata form, crystal clear in tone and structure, the first and third movements are full of orchestral sonority. More than any other Beethoven sonata, the Waldstein Sonata has the characteristics of a piano concerto without orchestra.
